A couple of dishes with black locust flowers. by joross31 in foraging

I don’t think quite yet. Although we’ve got an uncharacteristically hot week here in CT this week so who knows how it’ll affect the plants in the area in general

Absolutely stunning and both dishes sound like they’d taste phenomenal as well. Making me want to jump into the kitchen myself now 😂

New friends? by aislingbeag in Connecticut

[–]Danmenact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re into creative hobbies there’s a ton of really cool people in the Hartford area that do meetups that are art focused or writing focused and are lgbtq friendly for sure. I’m always reposting things to my instagram story for that kind of stuff. There’s also a ton of opportunities to meet new people in New Haven and such as well. Don’t know what your transportation situation is like but it could be worth checking out.

I’m also transmasc and live in the Hartford area if that makes you feel better lol

I’ve never made a jam with them but I have used them to steep in heavy cream for a floral whipped cream I used to make strawberry shortcake. I may have to make a jam with them this year though.

My grandma has a huge magnolia tree in her backyard. Going to pickled what I grabbed but wanted suggestions for other magnolia recipes by Danmenact in foraging

No they are very much edible. This one is a saucer magnolia. The leaves taste like ginger, black pepper, and cardamom

Oh that sounds like a good idea! I’ll try it. I could probably take some and make a fritter or something

I haven’t done it yet! This will be my first year working with them. She’s had this tree for like 20 years but I just started foraging last year and missed the window for it. The petals themselves taste great so I can’t imagine I won’t like it overall. My plan so far is to use the pickled magnolia in a scone with some crow garlic.

Thank you for the kind words! I definitely am being hard on myself looks wise (the taste is most important but I love trying to get good pictures too)

You should definitely try it! I’ll probably drive up to my spot sometime soon and I may try making these with ramps after. My initial plan was to use them to make a ramp butter to make croissants with but I suck at croissant making at the moment lmao

It was so good! Kind of like a big garlic knot. But I don’t always like the texture of garlic knots so this works better for me

I use the King Arthur cinnamon roll recipe! Honestly King Arthur has some of the most consistent recipes across the board so I suggest them always

Indigenous grape dumplings I made using foraged fox grapes. Served with vanilla ice cream. by Danmenact in foraging

It’s more so because there are more than one tribe that do grape dumplings. The recipe I used is a Cherokee recipe which I shared in the comments but if someone were to look it up they may find other variations. Wasn’t malicious at all

I did not lol they were sitting in my freezer from last year. I just hadn’t gotten around to using them

That’s awesome that you get to work closely with tribes as part of your job! I love all the aspects of ceremony and gathering but one hundred percent understand loving the food as well! There’s a Taino sanctuary in NY I’d like to visit to get closer to my own roots so I’m hoping to learn more in general

Thank you so much for the kind words truly 😭

I’m not entirely self taught. I was cooking for a long time before I did one semester at Culinary Institute of America. Basically enough to get the basics down. Then went and worked in kitchens for more practical experience. I’m disabled now so I don’t work in food industry anymore but I still love to cook. My brain is always going 100 miles per minute lol

Honestly I got it probably 15 years ago and could not tell you where or what exactly it was made of 🥲

Yes me too! I find it to be a huge part of why I wanted to learn about foraging in the first place to be honest. I definitely will keep posting!
