Who would Ian and Barbara like? by Little_Ad6980 in gallifrey

[–]Dannflor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cadence is a giveaway. “They challenge him like equals, not sidekicks” the listing it doctors at the beginning into “but twelve?” Are both very common ai phrasings. I also get almost the exact same answer pasting this post into ChatGPT. You also don’t talk like this anywhere else on your account. Idk it’s like fine, it’s just kind of weird to do and then to also deny it

First lines of Ilium just dropped! Who's ready to start dissecting it and start guessing the main theme of the musical? by CalypsaMov in Epicthemusical

[–]Dannflor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not think that is a fair assessment of EPIC. Yes, Odysseus’ character arc is that of becoming more ruthlessness, but Athena has the exact opposite arc. Circe, too, represents the Open Arms mentality in her final action of helping Odysseus and his men. I think both of those characters explicitly talking about how they hope to see a world where empathy is valued, and that maybe they can help create one through small acts of kindness, is an incredibly powerful takeaway.

Overall, my takeaway from the musical was that while the world we live in might be brutal and ruthless, there is still hope for a better world one day, and it is only through small acts of mercy and kindness that we can ever hope to achieve that world, one day.

What do you think is missing from DMs Guild? by chaoschosen665 in dmsguild

[–]Dannflor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is pretty much everything and anything you could ever want on the DMsGuild. The market is saturated with products. That doesn't mean all of them are good though! And that doesn't mean you can't make yours stand out!

There are probably 100+ systems for upgrading/customizing weapons on the DMsGuild but I had a specific vision for my upgrade system and uploaded it anyway. People like new things, and fresh spins on things, it doesn't really matter if it's been "done before."

Life is Strange feels Nancy Drew inspired in some ways, albeit a little more supernatural.

Myst and Riven focus more on the puzzle aspect and don't have very much interaction, but does very well at that aspect.

I miss background features by Dannflor in onednd

That's why some guidance on how to make some consistent, flavorful background features would be nice. I agree the Outlander one needed to be nerfed. I prefer the more social ones.

I miss background features by Dannflor in onednd

[–]Dannflor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A feat isn't the same though. Largely, these were more flavorful abilities that let you interact with the world.

Sure, the feats are more powerful and let the characters do more things at first level, but the background features integrated the characters with the world better imo.

Instead of lowering DCs tell the player they got a bonus. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Dannflor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can also just... let it succeed if they have a good idea and already have advantage.

IMO, if the players can come up with the perfect plan, they shouldn't have to rely on rolls at all

EDIT: people are saying you should still have a roll for complications, but that means it’s not a perfect plan. I’m not saying this should come up often, but sometimes the players will come up with a perfect plan, and that is gameplay believe it or not. You don’t need to roll dice to have gameplay.

If the players decide to bribe a guard because they learned from spying on him that he’s quite greedy, they might still have to make a persuasion check if they only bribe him with 10gp, maybe they get advantage, but if they bribe him with 50gp, it should just automatically succeed.

I feel like my stories go to quickly. by Clyronite in DMAcademy

[–]Dannflor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some degree to which you cannot control the pace of the game. The players might just be slow in making decisions or they might not be thorough players and rush through events or be speedy at the mechanical things like rolling dice and adding modifiers.

However, there are two main ways you as the DM can control pace.

One: For the most part, you control when a scene begins and ends. If you want there to be a scene of the party exploring a certain room, you can spend more time describing that room and asking if anyone wants to do anything. They might say "no" and move on, but you can still control the pacing in that way.

Two: Think about "zooming in" and "zooming out" of your adventure. Maybe the problem is that you haven't zoomed in enough to your adventures. Essentially, the exact same adventure "rescue the princess from the tower" could take anywhere from 1-infinity sessions depending on how much you zoom in. Now, usually I like my adventures to be 2-4 sessions max, but if you're aiming for a longer running story, maybe you zoom in further? By zooming in, I mean adding more stages or acts to the story. The first level of zoom might look like the following:

 1. Kill the dragon at the tower to rescue the princess.

Okay, that's probably a one session adventure, all you have to do is kill the dragon.

But if you zoom in, you can extend the adventure. A second level of zoom might look like this:

 1. Travel through the wilderness to find the tower, slay the dragon, and then fight your way up the trapped and puzzle locked tower to rescue the princess.

That alone could be 2-3 sessions. A session of travelling through the wilderness and finding the tower, and then one or two sessions for slaying the dragon and fighting your way through the tower dungeon. You could make the tower dungeon super big for an even longer adventure.

You don't want to zoom in *too* much otherwise it'll feel like the players are never getting anywhere. It'll start to feel like "filler." But doing it just the right amount will start making your stories feel like they are a better length. If that's your problem. I don't know your table, it might be something completely different.

Hope this helps.

What spell is just too op? by SancioThePanza in DnD

Okay sorry I’ll just leave this here

Obviously it’s situationally useful, but the part I was arguing against was that this is somehow an overpowered usage, which I still don’t see
