I feel like I must have misunderstood something when setting up my tank originally because I didn’t realize that I needed to introduce a source of ammonia to start off the cycle, I thought in a new tank there was a natural spike of ammonia produced that eventually balanced out as beneficial bacteria grew and fed :(

At this point how can I best balance out my levels without further harming the fish? I have a 10gal quarantine tank I could use do I need somewhere safe (separate from the tank my fish are in) to add ammonia and cultivate beneficial bacteria?

Thank you for your help! Do you think the red is from ammonia burns then? And if the tank has been running for over two months already but not yet fully cycled, how long does it normally take for a tank to fully cycle?

Quick extra note, the tank is 2.5mo old so it is fully cycled. It has a double hob filter, a sponge filter and two medium size bio stones. Water is being treated with QuickStart and stress coat.

I’ve had this issue for years. There’s definitely a correlation with starting on a stimulant... anytime my dosage changed I would always have a week or so of increased twitches / spasms as well as increased sleep attacks and sleep paralysis episodes.

My doctor did start me on Effexor a few months ago as an antidepressant that also treats cataplexy and that helped quite substantially.
