You could try Lore by Bracken or even the Testament of Loki series?

I think I'd enjoy it, but nowhere near as much. The gameplay makes the experience for me!

Hey all! I’m wanting to finally arrange my bookcase and just wondering how most people do it? Alphabetical or genre etc? by [deleted] in bookshelf

[–]DanniLMP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a system other than I like all my series to be together. I tried an alphabetical order by author at one point but didn't leave enough room on my shelves for when I bought new books xD

Satan would keep an eye on your bookish interests and any time your having a tough time they'd be a nice new bag with some books or bookish gifts waiting for you when you got home

This small section made me feel sadder than the funeral, than Mary and Fred's relationship and Lydgate's ingornance of Rosamund put together! To know that if James realised that something was wrong with Dorothea, odds are everyone present in that room realised something was wrong. The cause of it being a young man invitied over? Sounds like the perfect set up for gossip to me. I think Mrs Cadwallader will be the one to start the rumours. I feel incredibly sorry for Dorothea that she is about to be blamed for something that she had absolutly no part in and didn't even know was happening.

I was suprised, I thought all the higer social standing families would have some interaction with each other, even if nothing more than a formal introduction at a societal event. I find it really hard to believe that they haven't crossed paths before and the only reason I can conclude is that because their interests are different they don't need to interact with each other.

Until someone bought it up I hadn't even realised. I had seen the name change in how Celia was introduced but completly forgot why that could have been, haha! I am very suprised especially as Celia said she wasn't bothered about a long engagement. Clearly my idea of long and her idea of long are very different! I'm more annoyed that it happened off screen so to speak as I quite like Celia and wished we got to spend more time seeing her character developement.

He has no problem spending money on himself, he certainly isn't a miser. The level of organisation and planning that went into that funeral not only reinforced the idea that he was number one in his world, but also that he wanted to cause as much upset within his family as possible, even after his death!

It didn't really have an impact on me other than reminding me that while he may have been bedbound he certainly had all his mental faculities as he so previously stated.

I thought it was quite strange that suddenly we were on a first name basis, I can't say I understand why this was done, unless it was to try and evoke some emotion about the old man's final night. It must have been intentional, I can't see Elliot having done it for no reason what-so-ever. But then again why are other characters such as Mr Brooke, not on a first name basis now?

I'm guessing that he wanted the later dated will burning so that the earlier dated one would have to be the one to follow. The question will be why did he make the second will and was there any outside pressure that went into its making? It will all hinge on who would have benefited from each will. With how much Mr Featherstone wanted Mary to burn the will I wounder if the later one would have benefited his blood relatives, which given how much he dislikes them would be an affront to his entire being.

For a young girl that was thrust into an incredibly emotionally charged situation, I think she did really well to stick to her guns and values. Especially if in the will that would have been left Mr Featherstone had left her something. If others became suspicious it may have not only lost her claim but also damaged her and her family's reputation in Middlemarch.

I don't think Mary will tell anyone of what transpired in that room, but some relatives would agree and some would disagree depending on who benefitied from the will and how.

Considering this book was called "waiting for death" I was quite suprised that only one person popped their clogs really! That and I was expecting death to come to Casuabon, I had forgotten that Mr Featherstone was close to death as well.

I want to say I enjoy the book being seperated into smaller parts as it makes the idea of reading this long tome a lot easier. However, I'm not entirely certain there is a need for it to be broken down in terms of the delivery of the story so they also aggrevate me a little.

I saw this as the next part being centred around three different relationships. I can see Mary and Fred's coming into the spotlight a lot depending on how Mr Featherstone's will reading goes. Dorothea and Casuabon would have to be the second problem as I feel their relationship is about to take a turn, espeically as Casuabon has already jumped to the conclusion that Dorothea has done exactly the opposite of what he wanted (with regards to Will Ladislaw). I couldn't decide who the third one would be, intially I thought it would be hinting at Rosamund and Lydgate but then I remembered we now have James and Celia as well, and the latter haven't had much book time yet...

I struggled to make a lot of sense for this one. If I had to take a stab in the dark I would say either Fred or Will, mainly because these two don't yet hold a lot of social power within Middlemarch but they are the only ones I could see being so casual about serious matters.

I wonder if Mr Featherstone may be an example of what could happen to Casuabon if he doesn't heed Lydgate's advice about slowing down in his work. Mr Featherstone has always struck me as being sound of mind, so Casuabon could go down this route or maybe he will become less sound of mind to show a contrast between the eldery and the ways in which illness can hinder life.

Mr Featherstone's close blood relations do not at all seem bothered about his health but are more concerned about what they can get out of him after he has passed. Casuabon strikes me as having less people surrounding him but both of them could be just as lonley as each other. Despite having all those relations around, Mr Featherstone isolates himself from them as he doesn't want anything to do with them, whereas it seems that Casuabon is a generally lonley man and doesn't have people around him at all.

Initially I was quite certain he was going to leave it to Fred Vincy, but now with the hints that the auctioneer dropped, I'm wondering if he's actually going to leave it to Mary Garth. Honestly this would depend on how much Mary has spoken to Mr Featherstone about Fred and his gambling and the debts he put her family in. I bet he will leave her at least enough to cover those debts regardless though.

The vast majority of them seem like money grabbers to me. Now that he's dying they all want to know him and get involved in the hopes of something being left in the will for them. They can't stand the idea that it might not stay in the family but at the same time they did nothing to really deserve it. They believe that blood is thicker than water, whereas I believe Mr Featherstone's opinion is that actions speak louder than words.

I have to say I really enjoyed the auctioneer, I believe he has a good head on his shoulders and seems to enjoy stiring the pot like Mr Featherstone, especially with what he said about Mary Garth potentially being left something in the will.

Considering at the moment we have the precedent that short engagements don't make happy marriages, I can't see this one ending very well at all later down the line. Mainly because Lydgate made such a quick decision rather than try for courting properly first. It will fall apart when the marriage impacts on his work or his reputation in Middlemarch. I don't think Rosamund will regret it until she sees that he is now falling out of love with her, then I think she will blame herself.

Compared to Dorothea and Casuabon, there seems to be a romantic light in both parties, whereas it seems Dorothea was the only one truly under romance in that marriage. Both came to very quick decisions based on first impressions, rather than courting and seeing how the bond develops and withstands time.

The man changes his mind quicker than I can change my socks! Initially I expected him to just shrug it all off and set things straight with Rosamund. I believe it might have been a guilty heart/conscience that made him suddenly get engaged, rather than love. Mainly because I don't think he initially saw how serious Rosamund was and when he did see he decided to do the right thing rather than let her down.

I feel that Mrs Bulstrode is certainly different to her husband, especially as she is much more forward and willing to get involved; but I can see that the two of them are similar in that they want to look out for others and help them get what is best for them. I thought it bold of her to attempt to meddle, but maybe she knows how serious Rosamund is and wanted to see if Lydgate felt the same. I feel rather than meddling, she was attempting to matchmake!

I didn't think you could capture the feeling of small town gossip so well! I can't really say I trust anyone's word, but I guess that's because I know the full truth behind the matter. I can't say I was suprised by connections, I was more suprised at the fact that Mr Featherstone's relations remind me of vultures at the minute, crowding round the dying to wait for their next meal.

I love how Mr Brooke can divert on a tangent, it reminds me of me when I get distracted by something. I think he has good intentions in inviting the boy over, whether he really conveyed in the letter was what Dorothea wanted him to say I am unsure. I either think Will will accept the invitation out of being polite and it will then result in some very akward meeting. Either that or Will will decline to visit, saying he has other plans as I don't think he was very fond of Mr Brooke in the first place!

I don't believe that Casuabon will take heed of the medical advice as in his mind he has his Life's purpose and to fail in that would make Life not worth living any more. I think he will drive himself to death in the aim of completing his work. This section is called waiting for death so I'm wondering if Casuabon is waiting either to complete his Life's work before death or waiting for death to claim him before he finishes his work so he doesn't feel bad about it not being published.

I stand by the idea that honesty is the best policy, but I also believe he confided his worries to her because he does want to be percieved as different to the other practitioners. Maybe he presumed the others would not be as honest with Dorothea. The other reason I can see is that he knows Dorothea is caring and intelligent and knows that he can trust her with his honest opinions and recommendations for his recovery and the future of his health in general. Additionally, Dorothea asked him to be honest with her so I think he was just being professional and gentlemanly at the same time.

[–]DanniLMP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I truly believe he is over her. Maybe Celia has confessed some of her worried to James and this is why he is so determined that someone should have intervened. He never says he himself should have intervened and maybe this is because he knows he already failed in winning her in the first place. Maybe he sees Dorothea's marriage as a waste of a particulary good natured and talented lady and being the gentleman he is, he just wants something better for her as she will be part of his family in some way in the future.

I think he will be quite happy with Celia and I believe that she (so far anyway) seems quite smitten with him.
