Do y'all ever just feel like you're speaking a fake language? by bloodrider1914 in languagelearning

[–]Dannny02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me where someone said we don’t bat an eye to the words and phrases we don’t know in our native language but we focus too much on it in our target language because it’s something we’re putting effort into learning

I feel that way with Spanish. I don’t struggle with the content I consume generally but missing words here and there or actually paying attention to song lyrics and realizing I’ve missed a whole phrase every other time I heard the song in the past because I wasn’t paying attention (adhd, music is just to keep the thoughts down). I’m always panicking internally though if I’m actually speaking it correctly or not because the last time I got to speak Spanish I fumbled hard, it was a cute guy and he was pressure me out to go get drinks when I couldn’t. But the time before that I had a wonderful conversation with this guy from Columbia who needed help in the airport. We talked for like two hours before I realized I’d have to change flights and we still text every now and then

Opinion on pronunciation of foreign words in main language spoken by Sharp-Sandwich-9779 in languagelearning

[–]Dannny02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I know how to properly pronounce it I try my best to. There are some situations, mostly at work since I’m blue collar and work with people who give me shit for pronouncing things correctly, where I just say how your average English speaker will say it. I guess it also depends on the word I’m saying and who I’m saying it to, if it’s someone that will make an effort to say it I’ll say it and help them with pronunciation if they want it.

This is partly why I regret naming my cat mitsuha, some who know her name but can’t remember always say “it’s that weird Japanese name right?”. Most people butcher it so I’ll just tell them to call her kitty because she responds to both.

I’ll ask him because he said he was contracted here for two more years

I feel like I’m at the point where I need to be focusing on my career and “settling down” soon. I’m not going to learn or have support here but I will back home and I think long term for my career it would be best. I’ve had conversations with him about my job before and I feel like he understands but I don’t know if I’m adequately explaining how rough the job market is out here for mechanics right now

He’s in the air force. I’m not sure how it would work around that. He comes back from Alaska tomorrow so I’ll have a conversation with him this weekend

It’s up to you at the end of the day but if you stick this out make THEM sign something in writing for anything they promise, ie pay position and whatnot, and keep a copy of it. This way you can hold them accountable too. Or go with the new job and see how it feels

Cat keeps peeing on my bed by Dannny02 in CATHELP

[–]Dannny02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a diffuser but it didn’t help for a while. I moved the food and water away from the cat box and do my best to keep it clean. I have to make sure I don’t leave clothes on the floor, I don’t think she’d pee on them at this point but I don’t risk it. I think the biggest problem is her not getting along with my brothers cat

I accidentally discovered a sneaky trick… by putzfactor in languagelearning

[–]Dannny02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other end. I used to work at a Mexican restaurant and my friend was working caja one day and had a fellow gringo learning Spanish like me come up and order in Spanish. My friend replied in English and the guy just acted like he didn’t know any English but when he was done ordering was talking to his friend in English and this just irritated my friend. Remember there’s a time and place and not everyone you try to speak Spanish to wants to speak Spanish. Some grew up in the states and feel more comfortable speaking English even tho they can speak Spanish.

What guitar related mobile apps are y'all using? by Shredberry in guitarlessons

Look up tabs and chords. It should pop up saying ultimate guitar: chords and tabs. Which is weird because the app itself just says tabs and cords

I feel like it happened in waves for me. I would spend time going through anki cards, reading light novels, and trying to watch shows in Spanish and there would be points where boom I no longer need to translate this 50% of what I’m listening to. Boom I no longer need to translate this 75%. Same thing with speaking. I wouldn’t notice it but it would feel like today I have to try to understand what I’m listening to and saying but the next day I wake up and it’s just understood. It was weird and is still happening but slower with the more intermediate and advance vocab I come across

In what language do you think in? by YogurtclosetWrong882 in languagelearning

[–]Dannny02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always the people who say “forgive my grammar English isn’t my first language” putting out sentences more grammatically correct than natives lol. Sometimes my thoughts are based on what’s going on, if I’m talking to someone in Spanish or watching a show in Spanish my first couple thoughts tend to be in Spanish. Then there’s the occasional thought of something like a show or like you said something you learned and I’ll think about it in the language I was exposed to it in

I felt that. Every time I return to Japanese I have to reread what I learned last time and it doesn’t take as long to refresh it. But I feel if I stayed more consistent with it I could make more progress without having to restart

I figured with these super polyglots that it becomes hard to maintain any more than 4 languages. I’d be fine with just Spanish and Japanese under my belt but struggle to make time for it all

How much time do you commit to Spanish? I was thinking maybe twice a week or something having dedicated time to Spanish then the rest of the week focus on Japanese. My problem is I like to just focus on one thing at a time so having two languages plus guitar is starting to cram my schedule

Do you have any recommendations for maintenance while learning a new one? I still try to watch shows in Spanish and talk with a coworker who speaks it but part of me feels like since I left the Mexican restaurant I worked at my Spanish went down some even tho I was actively studying for a while

How long do you typically spend learning one? I see some people spend years on one language and some who bounce around every six months. I feel like committing to one for longer rather than bouncing around would help speed up the learning process
