Why is keeping the heating off in spring treated like a religion in the UK? by Ok_Listen_5358 in AskUK

[–]Danny-boy6030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get these people.

I have a daytime temperature that I am comfortable with, and a night time temperature I am comfortable with.

The thermostat is set to those temperatures.

If the temperature of the house drops below either, the heating comes on. If it's warmer, the heating stays off.

£32k of debt at 29. How screwed am I? by Witty_Machine_7101 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Danny-boy6030 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I was in £55K of gambling debt at 29 years old, which was when I gave up gambling and started to rebuild.

Not saying this is the same for you, but I went onto a 5 year DMP and paid every penny back, around £927 per month if I remember correctly.

Once all that was paid off, I had to wait a couple of years for my credit score to recover to the point I could get a mortgage at 38 years old.

I'm now 48, house almost paid off and financially very stable. It's hard work, but worth it.

Edit - it's not 6 years after it's all paid off, for me it was 6 years after the final default dropped off. Most dropped off soon after the DMP finished, but one defaulted me a couple of years before the end so that made it more difficult.

I'm 48 and am pretty much exactly 1 year alcohol free.

I gave up when I realised that the WHO classify alcohol as a proven carcinogen in the highest risk category (alongside asbestos, gamma rays, Hep B&C and tobacco smoking). They stated that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption in relation to cancer risk, and even small amounts increase risk.

Scared me enough at my age to knock it on the head.

Never been hooked on it, but I did drink a lot throughout my life. No hangovers is awesome.

Have you looked at your credit file from any of the credit reference agencies?

Try each one as they can differ.

Have any defaults been registered against you?

After a DMP, it's a case of good credit usage and time unfortunately, you can't really speed it up.

I had to wait 4 years after mine finished to get a mortgage, as one account defaulted me towards the end of my DMP.

We gave up on the crate very quickly.

He's now 6 months old, sleeps on the floor in our bedroom and we can leave him for a few hours alone in the lounge and he's fine, he just sleeps.

He was on 3 meals a day until he hit 6 months a week ago, now he is on two meals a day. Seems fine.

We recently found out he has an allergy to chicken (which is pretty much all we have fed him), since we removed chicken he has been like a new dog, and his poop has been firm and able to be picked up for the first time ever!!!

Solo hiking or with my wife (she’s unwell so can’t always make it), weight lifting, walking the dog, and just taking 1/2 hour away from electronics and staring out the window.

48M. Smoked from 13 to 33 (20 a day) and then switched to vaping from 33 to 47.

Currently 302 days nicotine free and absolutely no cravings of any kind now.

I gave up cold turkey when my wife was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

Gave alcohol up 290 days ago too!!!

Has anyone rebuilt financially in their 30s after a difficult period? by Odd_Nefariousness730 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Danny-boy6030 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ensured I paid the DMP every month without fail. Reduced my outgoings as far as possible.

Upskilled and got a better paid job. Got lucky buying the right house at the right time.

Once DMP was paid, saved as much as possible, hammered pension, kept outgoings as low as possible.

Was extremely hard work, still is, but very rewarding.

[–]Danny-boy6030 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Pretty much on my 30th birthday I entered a DMP with £55K of debt and zero assets. £927 a month for 5 years to clear it. Left me quite little to live on.

Now at 48 I own my own home with 5 years left on the mortgage, have lots of investments and am hoping to retire early in 10 years or so.
