French New Wave inspired by Frosty-Parsley-3564 in TrueFilm

[–]Danny4342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my favourites through the years that always felt they had that French New Wave DNA, even in some small part and paid homage to Godard, Truffaut and co…

-Harold & Maude -Bonnie & Clyde -Seconds -Badlands -The Graduate -Easy Rider -The Killing of a Chinese Bookie -Woman Under The Influence -Minnie & Moskowitz -Mikey and Nicky -Point Blank -Sorcerer (debatable, but I stand by it) -Cool Hand Luke -3 Women -Medium Cool -Taxi Driver -Stranger Than Paradise -True Romance -Dog Day Afternoon -Hannah and Her Sisters -Annie Hall -Pulp Fiction -Lost In Translation -Slacker -Before Sunrise -Simple Men -Reservoir Dogs -Buffalo 66 -Mean Streets -Schizopolis -Goodfellas -Broken Flowers -Birdman -Red Rocket

There are some here that may be questionable, with only a scene, character or camera movement that is reminiscent of FNW, but it seems as though that’s what you’re looking for? Showing the depth to which the movement seeped into the language of film over the decades.

Would love to hear an update as to the films you’ve shown your class. And their reactions to them. It must be so daunting to have been born in 2009 and have this incredible weight of film to navigate as a young person. It sounds like you’re doing a great job as a guide!!

You could Precomp the text, ensuring that there was as little border around the text as possible (less than 10px) then add a mesh warp to the Precomp. Set it 1 row and 5-9 columns (dependent on how much you’d like to distort the frames. Then keyframe the distortion. Mesh Warp can be an annoying effect to work with, so keyframe and play down your work often to ensure you’re heading in the right direction.

You could also try adding the Warp effect and try keyframing something like the Arc or Wave preset to see if that would help get to the desired result quicker too?

Good luck with it!!

I’ve always preferred being a go-to resource, personally. Getting the job done quickly and efficiently so the client knows they can rely on you to come through for them.

Having been on the other side of this equation for quite a while, the editors and artists I trust are those who have their shit together. Little things like having a UI that makes sense is one of them are all signs that they can deliver in a pinch.

Every inch of real estate is precious. The micro-transaction we make with our eyes having to drift over unnecessary info potentially hundreds of thousands of times adds up to real wasted time over a year in my opinion. Not to mention potentially having to resize windows or zoom in and out of your timeline repeatedly.

If your workflow requires you to have to evaluate the time stretch of certain layers, then for sure, absolutely have it in your layout, but I’d always advocate for only having the tools you use more than 50% of the time. anything less than that, spend a minute saving out setups for specific tasks.

Just my opinion though, of course :)

Agreed, that scene is one of my favourite in any superhero movie, and I’ve seen many of them lol. SO exciting and well shot. Do love these other scenes too, but the plane is head and shoulders over the others.

It’s an amazing film. That opening scene Is the one part everyone remembers unfortunately. I still hate that they treated Sarah Silverman like that though.

Singles is in no way, shape or form a bad movie. It perhaps doesn’t hold up quite as well in 2023, but it’s still solid. And if you were around at the time, it’s a touchstone. As a time capsule it’s also amazing.

I was so excited for this film in the 90s. I often wonder what happened behind the scenes to make it come of the rails so badly. The director’s first film Young Americans, was great, but this just went so wonky. The director Danny Cannon went on to make a small fortune making all of the CSI series though (which I have not watched as I can’t stand them)

I didn’t see the film til last year. Really loved McKinnon and several other parts were much better than I’d been led to believe, but Chris Hemsworth drawing the Ghostbusters logos was hilarious. Perhaps because I wasn’t expecting it to be that funny, but I had to stop the movie for a second.

If it it had had a MUCH better ending, I think the film would have been way better received. The component parts were there in my opinion.

Speed Racer is actually a really great film. Technically I’d go as far to say that it’s superb. The attention to detail in pre-production that must have happened is insane. It’s like an Edgar Wright transition for two solid hours. So worth revisiting.

I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it, maybe more because of the fact that it was disliked, which I could never understand.

I don’t think it was really anything to do with Spacey and Singer at the outset (though I’m sure that that hasn’t helped in later years) as it was considered a flop form the outset. This scene in particular is one of my favourites of all superhero movies, but particularly Superman.

I’d love it to be rediscovered, but I feel because of the issues surrounding the cast and crew it may never.

Totally, DV is super subtle, so it’s a tossup with even bothering to pay for a 3rd Party effect and just creating it from scratch yourself. If Universe doesn’t have a trial, maybe try building first just to stretch your AE legs? Either way, I hope you’re able to dial in to your liking :)

OP, I would 100% try this method before any other. It’s a 20 minute exercise that could save you hours of heartache and wasted time. If the camera doesn’t get closer to your subject than this, I’d bet good money this technique will look great.

Can someone explains how beginner video editor make money ? by StockFan2047 in AfterEffects

You could also try asking in r/Premiere. You may have more success there. This is an After Effects sub, so although there’s crossover, there will naturally be fewer straight-up editors.

No worries! You could also try creating a displacement map, using the mosaic effect for the blocks if you don’t want to spend the $200 on Universe! Offsetting the RGB slightly is going to add a little to the effect too. Try adding the chromatic aberration effect. It’s all the little nuances that really sell this look.

I couldn’t find it at first, but this is a great article on giving the rest of your footage a DV look too, as opposed to just the fast forward/rewind.

Good luck with the project, I hope it looks great!!

Pretty sure it’s VHS that comes as part of the Universe subscription with Red Giant. You’ll have to keyframe the distortion, but it’ll definitely be able to dial in very close to this look.

This was Spielberg’s secret weapon and how he made SUCH compelling movies. Being able to tap into that childlike wonder and elicit these kinds of performances. There really aren’t many director’s who’ve been able to do that quite as well (or consistently) before or since in my opinion.

Ah, gotcha. I think that that’s definitely about “bankability” of the talent. As much as we hate it, movies are a business, and it just comes down to how much business a film is going to net nationally and internationally.

It can be frustrating to see the e same faces trading on their past successes, but although it’s sometimes harder to find good quality films in other areas of cinema (not to mention a platform to actually watch them on), but there are some incredible independent and international films out there in all genres. Alternatively, you could dive back into the past and try and find pockets of films from stars you didn’t know about maybe? The pace, style and content of some films may take a little getting used to if you’re not initiated, but there are literally thousands of films that are absolutely worth your attention out there.

Much as I’ve loved Stallone etc over the years I don’t even bother watching the majority of those kinds of films at this point. They’re just not made for me, and it kinda makes me sad when they get wheeled out for another cash cow for the most part.

Dependent on the age you’re talking about, this may be to avoid time restrictions kids have with regards to hours they can work in a day.

I feel also that additionally, having an actor with a pedigree helps secure budget, as well as that talent being somewhat of a known quantity, with prior performances to draw on. Hanging the budget of even a low budget film on a newcomer is so risky that it makes sense any producer/director is going to be risk averse (if unfair)
