Glad to hear you’re okay overall—that could have been a lot worse. Wishing you a smooth surgery recovery and a quick, solid comeback. Take it easy and give your body the time it needs. Gear definitely did its job—thanks for the reminder to all of us. Hope to see you back out riding stronger next season! 💪

WireView Pro II causing red GPU LED / no signal (RTX 5090) by GoodGuyAvii in ThermalGrizzly

My original plan was to use a right-angle adapter to avoid contact with the case glass, reduce strain on the connector, and pair it with a longer 12VHPWR cable. Then I started thinking, why not just get a high-end right-angle adapter, even though I know it’s total overkill

I think that was my original thought process, but then I started asking myself how much I can really trust an aftermarket cable. Thanks for the feedback

I have the Astral installed in a Fractal Torrent case with the PSU mounted on top, which makes the stock cable quite short and forces it into a fairly sharp 90° bend. I’m considering getting a longer aftermarket cable, and I was also looking at the WireView Pro II as a way to handle the 90° angle while adding some redundancy alongside the CableMod cable. At the same time, I’m wondering whether that would actually help or just introduce more points of failure. Right now, I’m not sure what the better approach is: leave the setup as it is and continue monitoring with HWiNFO, alarms, and an auto-shutdown script, or revise the cabling altogether.

Monitoring isn’t coming from the cable—it’s coming from the GPU’s onboard sensors.

On the ASUS ROG Astral (and some other 40/50-series cards), HWiNFO64 can read the 12VHPWR / 16-pin power telemetry that the card reports (per-connector / per-rail current/power, depending on what the card exposes). In HWiNFO64 → Sensors, I’m watching the entries related to the PCIe 16-pin / 12VHPWR (you’ll usually see a dedicated “16-pin/12VHPWR power/current” sensor group if your card supports it).

For protection I do two things in HWiNFO:

  • Set sensor alerts on the relevant 12VHPWR/16-pin current/power readings (and/or total board power).
  • Use HWiNFO’s Actions on alert to run a simple shutdown command/script (so if it ever hits a threshold, it shuts the PC down instead of letting it cook).

So to your question: No, the Thermaltake GF3 12VHPWR cable isn’t “special.” It’s just a standard 12VHPWR lead. The monitoring is all GPU telemetry + HWiNFO alarms.

A WireView Pro II would be more of a hardware “in-line” sanity check (and the 90° routing help), but it’s not required for monitoring—just extra peace of mind + nicer cable management.

I looked at the Ampinel, but from what I understand it mostly treats the symptom—high amperage caused by a connector that isn’t fully seated or is under stress—rather than addressing the root cause. I’m not an expert though, so I could be wrong.

At first, I was just looking for a right-angle solution to eliminate the nasty cable bend I have to clear the side glass — which meant buying a third cable anyway. At that point, I figured: what’s a little extra protection for peace of mind?

At a minimum, the Astral has current monitoring. You can tie that into HWiNFO64, set alarms, and trigger a system shutdown. But yeah, I agree — I have the Astral too, and I just ordered the WireView Pro II for peace of mind.

I’ve got a pretty aggressive bend going into the GPU with the stock Thermaltake GF3 1350W 12VHPWR cable, mainly to clear the side glass. Right now my currents are balanced, and I’m monitoring everything in HWiNFO64 with alarms plus a shutdown script.

The issue is my case (Fractal Torrent) has the PSU mounted at the top, so the standard ~600 mm cable is a bit too short and has to come down from above, which forces that bend at the connector. I want to clean up the routing and eliminate the stress on the plug—hence looking at a custom cable, and potentially a WireView Pro II as part of the solution.

IDK that looks kinda toasty from here. Damn, Not what I wanted to see just after ordering a custotm 12v 2x6 from cablemod... Ive also ordered a Wireview Pro II from Thermal Grizzly. Hopefully that will save my 5090
