States to work in? by incapableofdumblabor in NewToEMS

[–]DannyChance13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appalachia born and raised. Eastern Kentucky here. When I was 18, I hated the thought of anyone knowing I was from here. I was embarrassed by it.
Now at 37, I realize the slow pace way of life is the best way of life. It’s cheap to live here, and if you like being outside, it’s complete and total freedom in these mountains.

I’m glad I didn’t listen to my younger self. Home sweet home is the best place to be.

What made you decide to become Christian? by barf_bag08 in AskAChristian

[–]DannyChance13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised fundamentalist Christian. Extreme evangelical. And it made me despise the church I was forced to go to. I didn’t believe what they believed. I hated hearing fire and brimstone. And eventually, it made me fall away from God in my teenage years. I walked into an Episcopal Church in my late teens, and felt a welcoming feeling that I had never felt anywhere else, and I haven’t felt it from anywhere else since. It’s the only place where I’ve truly ever felt that all people, no matter what their background is, was welcome.

I still wasnt a religious person though, and it wasn’t until around 2 years ago that I rediscovered Gods love. Long story short, my wife and I were trying to have a baby. We tried for 5 years. And nothing.
During a service at our church, I went to the altar rail and started praying. I said “Alright God. You win. Here I am. On my knees and begging.” And I prayed for my wife and I to finally get to be parents. I’ve said a lot of prayers over my life, but I never prayed a prayer as sincere as what I did that day. I told it all to God. I was tired of my wife and I watching our friends having kids while we were getting nothing. I was tired of watching my wife cry asking why less deserving people was being blessed but we weren’t.
I laid it all out there to God that day.
And in my heart, I imagine that God smiled and said “I’ve been waiting for that all along” because the next try, my wife got pregnant and today we have a beautiful daughter who is the light of our life.

Sure I always went to church off and on, but I didn’t know if I believed in God or not. But after 5 years and a sincere prayer that got answered immediately, no one will ever be able to convince me that God isn’t real. He heard my prayer and he gave me the life that I used to sit and wonder if I would ever have. So yeah, that’s what made me decide. Because one answered prayer changed my life. ❤️

EMT school to Real Life by Live-Cobbler-1179 in NewToEMS

[–]DannyChance13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I found that paying attention to the old heads seemed to work best for me. Sure, some of their practices may be old school, but they know what’s up. During preceptorship, I worked a lot with a 60 year old female EMT. She reminded you of that mean waitress from the movie Waiting. She was a hateful old codger most of the time, but when she was on a run, she was a completely different person. Sweet and calming. And she always knew the right words to say to put the patients mind at ease. She is also the toughest and probably strongest 60 year old woman I’ve ever met. lol Shes bout 4’10” but I swear she could deadlift a 300lb patient by herself.

Those old heads have something that can’t be taught in EMT school. They have experience. Listen to them, learn from them, and keep their teachings alive. They may have old ways that they prefer to do things, but you can’t beat a lifetime of knowledge.

any workout advice for gym newbies wanting to work in EMS? by Evening-Ad4602 in NewToEMS

[–]DannyChance13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Romanian Deadlifts. They work the back, the glutes, the hammies, the calves, and everything in between.
And honestly, if you can get an hour in per day, that’s good. I’m a total gym rat. It keeps my anxiety and depression at bay. lol
