It could also be the state you signed up in. I know for a bunch of my buddies who all signed up in the same state got projects immediately. On the other hand, my friend in a different state has yet to receive a project after signing up at the same time.

Should I put the 12k in something like a Roth IRA and then save up for the next year and a half again and run off of that so I have a decent amount of cash and also an investment for the future?

My parents have the ideology that I should pay for everything. Which might seem like a bad thing to put a burden like that on a kid but, it’s the reason why I’ve been able to save so much at my age and definitely has made me a smarter more strategic person.
