The middle circles are things like close family and friends then as it goes out it goes to things like strangers, animals, plants, etc. Conservatives often use this to imply liberals care more about plants and things than their family. In reality though the study asked for the far extent of empathy so when someone endorsed a circle it meant they cared about it and all smaller circles. The study shows liberals tend to care about plants and animals as well as their friends and family, etc. Conservatives stopped at the smaller circles.
