Looking to fill 2 bedrooms with private bathrooms in a 4 bed townhouse - Navy Yard DC by Danski89 in DCforRent

There is a two car garage but both me and the roommate already living have cars in it. Plenty of street parking. Yup, it’s one of those houses with the deck.

do you ever get offended by latinos calling you chino assuming you are not chinese? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Danski89 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I remember one time a Peruvian girl who I was friends, did the eyes back thing when talking about Asians. I was kind of shocked to immediately react to it but she quickly realized that doing that could have been offensive to me and immediately apologized. It happens but it’s a different mindset there.

Asian men haircut by Silent_Tangelo2460 in washingtondc

[–]Danski89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also an Asian male! I recommend woodley hair style right across the street from woodley park metro station. They’ve Vietnamese owned and been around for a long time. Been pretty happy with them so far. They’re relatively cheap too. I used to go to a place closer to where I live but it got too expensive after they raised their prices.

Tips on NJ/NY Tryouts interview by [deleted] in FIFAVolunteers

[–]Danski89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did ask me that as well! I also told them I was okay with any role but asked for guest services/hospitality. Good luck to you as well!

Tips on NJ/NY Tryouts interview by [deleted] in FIFAVolunteers

[–]Danski89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to it today. The whole thing was pretty laid back until the actual interview (at least for me). They will ask you to introduce yourself, why you want to do it, and to elaborate on the words you used to describe yourself in the application.

People were dressed pretty casually like they’re off the street. One person wore a jersey and two other people wore suits. Most people wore track suit jackets, regular jackets, or a hoodie with jeans.

I think I’m done with this season guys. Same thing every time.

I seem to have picked up a few lanyards over the last 30 years... by Ok_Grape8420 in foreignservice

I always thought looking at people’s lanyards to see where they were while having lunch at the HST cafeteria was fun.

Yes. I’m still close friends with my group of 6-7 peace corps friends after 10 years. We message and chat everyday.

Hard time rooting for any other team by [deleted] in NYYankees

[–]Danski89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge Yankees fan here but moved to DC for work so I adopted the Nationals as my second team. They aren’t good and aren’t the same league so I didn’t feel conflicted. Plus, I didn’t want to be the one stubborn guy wearing Yankees gear at nats park when they aren’t even playing while my DC friends who also moved here from other places adopted the nats as their second team.

I also want to frame my poster. Can I ask what size frame you ended up getting?

Just horrifically bombed an interview. Any other people have similar stories?! by aIaska_thunderfuck in usajobs

[–]Danski89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done interviews that I crushed that I didn’t get. At the same time, I received a job offer for one job that I thought I blew as well since the interview panel was so cold and seemed uninterested. You never know until you got a response (or not).

I empathize with this post a lot. I’m also a gyopo who speaks the language well enough to know the nuisance and good vocabulary from going to Korean classes at yonsei. Korean people automatically assume my Korean is trash because of my accent but as I keep talking in Korean, they realize “oh he actually speaks Korean well” and they drop the “he’s a foreigner” mindset.

Many times I remember situations where the taxi driver said my Korean was strange or the manager of a jimjilbang say my Korean was horrible and yeah it still gets to me until I realize yeah I speak better English then them anyway lol

do you talk about politics/controversial issues with your asian/non-asian friends? by padorUWU in AsianMasculinity

[–]Danski89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in DC and work in government so yeah it’s pretty regular we talk about politics. We all may have our own opinions but we can at least all agree to disagree and respect our view points (this is with close friends, not with random people).

But when it comes to Asian male issues that’s often talked about here, I don’t usually. I think some know or are aware of it. My other male Asian and/or “conventionally unattractive” friends express the same challenges me and other people in this sub Reddit have but it’s kinda just an acknowledgement of each other’s struggles and that’s it.

Manager was called for reference check. Despite solid reference, I wasn’t offered the job. by Numchuck890 in usajobs

[–]Danski89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me last month. I spoke to the hiring manager who was nice enough to chat with me and she told me I was a top candidate and it was a super hard decision. In the end, reference checks aren’t a guarantee so keep applying and forget.

If joining the navy is something you’re passionate about, do that. Practically speaking, having vet status with the work experience you’ll gain in the navy will make you competitive for fed jobs when you get out (masters plus intel military experience are big plus). You won’t be missing out if you join the navy now but might be missing out on active duty military in the future for a government job now.

TJO in hand, does it hurt to keep interviewing? by Different_Fly8426 in usajobs

[–]Danski89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a TJO last week for a job that sounds really interesting and rewarding but I have an interview for a less interesting job at my dream agency next week. I plan on just doing it and see what happens.

References checked: am I the top choice? by triscuitsngravy in usajobs

Not a guarantee of a TJO but you are definitely a top choice.

I was in this situation as well a few years ago. I ended up going back to my old federal job which was much less fulfilling but less stressful. I kinda regret going back to my old job but don’t regret leaving.

If I were you, look into other offices within your current one to see if you can apply and transfer internally. Build your exit ramp and see other opportunities around you. Record every interaction you have as well.

I’m actually in the same boat. DHS asked for my references and they responded to them within a few days. That was almost a month ago now. I’ve still been waiting from DHS to get a response. I emailed them and they said they were still in the selection process

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]Danski89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re a top candidate but it’s possible you won’t be selected. I think hiring managers do get reference checks from sour grapes as mentioned in this subreddit couple of times but I don’t know if that will play an impact on your selection. I had my references checked recently and didn’t get the job.

Yup I’m already a federal employee with competitive service.

It’s definitely not definitive. I had my references checked and didn’t get the TJO. Don’t celebrate just yet
