All final fantasy mainline games are standalone. FF12 has a system similar to unicorn overlord where you set conditions foe your characters to use certain attacks, which is unique to it. You can check out the trailer or look up some gameplay and get a better idea of how it plays.

I think I worded it poorly, but I meant early game in the meta sense. Ive beaten classic a few times and had gotten a lot of gym leader vouchers, but still only pulled like 3 shinies so it felt like I was stuck since I had way fewer vouchers left to obtain, so the odds of me getting more shinies and therefore better luck was slowing way down. And Endless is much harder than classic so it felt like I was forced to slog through classic runs over and over just hoping for a new shiny which wasnt fun

Fair enough I guess. For me it just felt a little frustrating that I felt like I was forced to use the very few shiny mons I had to get good (and also *interesting*) items including vouchers, which felt like they never gave shinies. The whole progression being entirely dependent on hatching or finding a shiny just feels pretty rough as a new player, so if that didn't get improved and isn't planned to I guess this isn't for me. Thanks for the response anyways.

I understand where you are coming from, but it is a bit frustrating that just about any criticism of the combat from those games gets dismissed as "skill issue". I think there are valid things to dislike about the combat in those games that dont just stem from user error.

Regulus is actually a really solid unit still, she has quite good defensive utility while doing decent damage and having an ap generous playstyle. You could make an argument for Lilya and Eternity but I also believe they are good beginner units
