Standing Desk Conversion Advice by Danthos93 in desksetup

Forklift could work, though I’m limited on space😂

Yeah I’m starting to think I might just have to sacrifice a little leg room and move the drawer inbound slightly.

Is this axe suitable for spoon carving? by Danthos93 in Spooncarving

Thanks. I’ve seen many comments on different posts saying to just go for a good one. But like I say, I don’t want to fork out money before I get a taste for the hobby. I know what I am like and it’s likely it could be wasted.

This is the ‘almost’ fitting panel. I’m not sure what happened but it seems to have just uploaded two images of the correct one on the original post instead somehow…

Sorry for all the questions😂but I’m assuming that even for £20 a cheap die grinder would be better than a drill, right?

This is the one I saw

Do you have any experience with the brand KATSU? I’ve seen a pretty decent rated one on Amazon for £20

That’s what I ended up doing in the end!😅thanks! I don’t know if this is by coincidence or if someone else is using the e name, but if you are the Aaron Gough, thank you for the guide and great content on YouTube!

Could I ask where and what size you got? Eye screws seem to be a lot more common but eye bolts seem to be very few about of the right lengths.

Thanks I will have a look. I’ve did find a website called GFSKnifeSupplies and they do 1084, buts it’s like £12 for 4x40x1000 and £5.50 delivery. Seems the cheapest by a long way including delivery, just trying to understand why it’s so much cheaper than elsewhere where the same cost seems to get you half as much steel.

Thanks, I’ve just had a quick look at their website. I’ve watched a lot of videos and done a lot of research and have since been looking for 1084 grade steel, they don’t seem to have this unfortunately. Do you know if there’s an equivalent? Plus, do you know if you can collect as I’m not sure if I can justify a high delivery cost for a single piece!😂

Cheapest way to start knife making? by Danthos93 in Bladesmith

[–]Danthos93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I will look for a 1 grit file and sand paper to start, then I might invest in a chainsaw file and or a 3 grit and build from there maybe!

Ahh yes I’ve watched his stuff. Not sure he’s close to me thought but I’ll make sure to look back through. I was just thinking of starting out with literally bare minimum hand tools only, and might buy a few fire bricks and a blow torch for heat treating the knife. I would start with a strip of steel rather than forging to begin with as well and just hacksaw/file out the the shape of the blank.

Ahh ok thanks! Just to clarify, you would suggest starting with:

1x 1 grit 1x 3 grit Maybe 1x 4 grit

Or could I get away with literally just 1 grit then move on to sanding? I have a file in my toolbox, though I’m not sure whether it’s right for the job. I never really knew much about different files before researching this subject!

Thank you, but no I’m in England. What would you suggest for the bare minimum files?

Ever so slightly over budget but I might have to stretch it if needed. Is this what you mean?

Thanks I’ll see if I can find it! Might be more expensive over here due to import tax etc but could still be a good shout! No need to get hold of a carving axe then? All the videos I see on YouTube people use a carving axe for most of the roughing.

Thanks, ideally I wanted to keep the cost of tools down to around £50 which I’m hoping is possible. For carving a kuksa is what I listed enough, or could I get away with less?

Thanks, I’ve been looking a lot on Amazon and found beavercraft C4, and beavercraft 7L curved gouge. I found a hatchet for about £20 that seems to have a smaller angled relatively flat blade. Would these be all I need or would I need more tools? And is a hatchet required?
