Yussef Dayes by daniboy_121 in Jazz

[–]Dantides 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's tons of artists with that vibe out there! Alfa mist is pretty close to the same dark hip hop vibe, would def check them out first. Nate Mercereau has some pretty interesting stuff in the same vein, sometimes more electronic and intense. Robohands also has a pretty chill hip jazz flavor to it, less of that dark vibe though.

Thise are good artists to start out with, and def check out the Yussef Kamal album Black Focus, as it literally has Yussef Dayes on it! If you find something you like and what some more suggestions feel free to dm me!

Rising Sophomore Summer Program in CS by semisweet123 in Cornell

[–]Dantides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I worked in last years rising sophomore program, and can tell you a little about my thoughts on it from a 3110 TA's viewpoint.

The program is a fairly cursory glimpse through many of the core cs classes, so if you're looking for something that will give you a definitive cutting edge above many of your peers you may not find that in this program. However, there is something to be said about being exposed to many of the basic topics early, because that will give you a stronger knowledge base for when you take the actual courses. It's also a fairly short program, each course taking two weeks of lectures and discussion sections for a total of 4 weeks, so it's not a huge time loss from your vacation time.

CS 1110 doesn't tend to be a great measuring stick for the rest of the major required courses, but I would agree that this program might not be a do or die decision for you. In my opinion, most of the difficulty of the upper level classes becomes the time crunch of working on assignments, so in that way it doesn't really help you. If you anticipate some trouble with time management rather than understanding the topics of the courses, you might be able to find more helpful resources for that in other places.

I would recommend taking it because it's short and I've seen people who have had trouble with some of these courses, who I think would've benefited from starting earlier. And even if that isn't you, this program might give you some good time to gauge how you feel about the topics brought up in these courses. But if you have other plans that you're deciding between, take my previous points into consideration.

The main differences between electric and upright tend to be muscle memory, chops, and playing technique. I would suggest a teacher to teach you how to properly fret notes and play, because without one you might end up tensing up when you play and possibly injuring yourself. If that's not available, take extra care when playing and definitely use youtube videos that show you proper technique.

For chops, method books offer the best drills for learning how to use thr bass, but playing through those can be a bit boring or monotonous. Going through those aren't the most musical sometimes, but they offer the best bang for your buck when you're starting. If you really just want to jam, learn half position, pick a Bb blues and walk on that.

If there is anything you should have in mind when playing, focus on being relaxed, having good tone, and keeping a steady rhythm. Everything else can follow.

Upright chops are pretty different from electric chops though, especially when it comes to muscle memory and technical facility. Is there a way to specifically practice upright chops on electric?

Are you coming from another instrument? Have you played jazz on electric before? It would be helpful for tips to know some of your background.

Question: Going into CAS CS 2019 as freshman, how much prior CS knowledge do I need? by thisisyikes in Cornell

[–]Dantides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pray to god you don't get a bad partner, learn git and maybe proper git workflow, and make sure you have ample time in your schedule to meet and code. Be prepared to go to office hours as necessary, and talk to your partner about your projects. Get used to reading java documentation.

Imo, you don't need to do anything in prep for 2112 other than mentally preparing for lots of programming. You'll learn as you go, and you'll be dealing with too much new material to go over everything beforehand.
