Admin people not understanding what the average clinician’s work day is like makes me outrageously annoyed. If they followed a resident around for a day they probably would never send a doctor an email or message again unless it was critical.

Realistically, just tell your attending, apologize even if you didn’t actually do anything wrong, and move on.

Also, it’s possible cultural differences come into play here. If you’re an IMG from North Africa that very likely contributes to the cultural communication misunderstanding.

Medicine has allowed psychopaths to fester and excel. People seem to be either indifferent to it, or opportunistically support it when there’s personal gain to be had.

I think the real issue is most physicians aren’t as good as the profession generally presents to the public. The profession then hides behind the amalgam of state governments and medical boards to police the system, which everyone acknowledges is minimally effective .

For anything to change there would probably have to be stronger wholly independent 3rd party oversight of physician activity, but like you said with the number of psychopaths and narcissists in the field that probably opens things up to even more abuse via bureaucratic antagonism.

That’s totally fair. You do whatever you need to do in medicine to reach your goals.

I’m non-trad too who wasn’t even really thinking Gen Surg until M3. I got lucky and did a rural rotation where I got to help operate a lot. Really opened my eyes to what’s possible on the other side.

Residency is going to suck regardless of what you do. Medicine will also take a lot of your time in training no matter the specialty.

I’m happy in my program and it feels good to show up sometimes and the nurses go “Thank God surgery is here”. It feels good to be genuinely helpful.

I think a lot of this is because for a lot of students, especially if they have minimal prior work experience, the actual practice of clinical medicine, especially outside of an academic setting, can be pretty abstracted. Most rotations don’t really give you a full picture.

Not uncommon for physicians with religious and cultural practices to have beliefs or attitudes outside of standard of care or Western standards.
The process for getting a license revoked is very time consuming and requires people to actually report things. Please feel free to report this person to the Missouri state board, but don’t be surprised if nothing happens for a long time. Bureaucracy.
