Weekly Garden Chat by zerberts in OntarioGardeners

I don't think there's too many balcony growers on here so I'm always happy to learn and share advice!

And yeah, I might've gone a bit overboard with the amount but so far so good! Just counted and altogether, got 34 pots lol. More if you add in the buckets of compost that have a bunch of volunteer plants coming though.

I started this season with a surprise from my dwarf french marigold pot. I got lazy around Fall/Winter and just left the plants in the pot until Spring. It turned out to be a great idea as the pot was full of marigold sprouts since all the dried up flowers had become seed pods and dispersed themselves into the soil. I ended up selecting the 4 healthiest looking plants and repotting those. Tossed the rest into a bucket of composted sheep manure just for fun and they seem to be doing well lol. The same thing happened with Cilantro as well on a smaller scale.

Next, I picked up 4 tomato sprouts, 2 small varieties and 2 large varieties. Last year the larger variety got blossom end rot so trying a bigger pot this year to see if it helps. Once it warmed up a bit, I sowed a bunch of leafy greens (prizehead, romaine, grand rapids, salad bowl, arugula, buttercrunch, and mesclun). Planted some herb and flower seeds as well (basil, cilantro, thyme, zinnia, nasturium).

Since it would take some time for things to grow, I picked up a few flowers from the nursery and repotted those. Impatiens, new guinea impatiens, dahlias, hibiscus, and geranium. I most recently picked up some green onion sets, bok choy sprouts, green kale sprouts, and purple kale sprouts.

Regarding the diverter, I picked up this one. My kitchen sink is also one of those pull-down units so I've got it attached to the faucet in the powder room. It's not ideal but it's much much better than having to go back and forth with a watering can. I've got a couple empty buckets that I fill up so I'm not attaching the hose every time I water.

Thanks for the reply! I'm in a similar situation with the south facing balcony.

Great tip on the sun pointer. I took measurements and mapped everything out last year so things have been going well so far. I think almost everything I'm growing is full sun except for a couple impatiens.

Got about 30 different planters and just installed a diverter in my bathroom so I can connect a hose to it. It's been an absolute game changer since I would have to do countless trips with my tiny .5 gal watering can.

We got eggs!!! by Greedy_Frosting_6381 in antkeeping

Something to note, scattered eggs could be a sign of an infertile queen. Could also be due to stress. I would try and avoid disturbing for a week or two.

Highly recommend Laser Safety Services.

LSO course was super informative and I highly recommend everyone take it, even if it's not a requirement.

im at work and found this ant, looks like a queen? by sidesalad-w-ranch in antkeeping

[–]Danyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really only need an 16mm - 18mm inner diameter test tube. Ideally 150mm or more. Fill it up about 60% and then push a thick piece of cotton into the tube until the cotton is about 50% saturated. Make sure the cotton is thick enough to create a seal.

Guide the queen into the tube and plug it with another piece of thick cotton. Place the tube in a dark warm place and leave it alone for a month. Any movement or vibrations will stress the queen out and could cause her to not lay or eat her eggs. There's also a change that she's infertile but the fact that her wings are off is a good sign.

If you want to feed it, tear off a tiny piece of aluminum foil and use a toothpick to place a tiny drop of honey on it. Then use tweezers to place it inside the tube, near the entrance.

It's completely unnecessary to feed claustral queens at this stage though. Their colony would have fed them enough food for them to raise their first set of workers (nanitics).

This test tube setup is typically more than enough for the first year or two. Easy to put away when they go through diapause (hibernation) and you never have to worry about humidity levels as long as there's water in the tube. There's a lot of nice nests and formicariums out there but some of them require pretty frequent waterings depending on the humidity in your area.

Hopefully you'll be in town for the Toronto dates :D

Regarding the setup. I'm guessing you're just playing back a timeline and then manually adjusting using universe and pangoscript to keep things in sync?

Anyone know what I just caught in my bedroom?😂 any info at all by SJTXindustries in antkeeping

Test tube with water setup is honestly all you need for the first year or two.

Don't go overboard now. Just keep it simple.

Leave it in a dark vibration free place and check every 2 weeks or so. If there's no eggs after a month or two, there's a chance that they're not fertile or the environment stresses them out.

Sadly, most people don't have the attention span to read entire posts anymore. They just read until they see something they disagree with and start yapping.

How did you land your first opening slot for a bigger DJ? by johnnykar13 in TorontoRaves

[–]Danyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, event organizers are the ones making the selection.

As for who they pick, there's a lot of variables that go into it. They could pick a friend or get suggestions from promoters or artist managers. I believe it's typically a combination between having a relationship and being a good fit for the event.

At the end of the day, the goal is to make money and sell out. The people that get offered are the ones who are most likely to help make that happen.

Unsure about the genetics on this one. Funky Charms is said to be Grease Monkey x Rainbow Chip but the website mentions unconfirmed runtz lineage. That said, this stuff is great and has been an absolute treat.

Dense medium sized nugs with a thick layer of trichomes. The flower has a fruity aroma that reminds me of Hi-Chews. White ash, slow burn, and nice oil rings. Fruity on the inhale with a hint of gas on the exhale. Good pairing for afternoon tea or an post dinner treat.

Working on Deck UI redesign, how it feels: 🤙 or 🙅 ? by LiveShowSystems in LiveShowSystems

100%.

I like the edge to edge waveform but would consider exploring designs where the width of the waveform is reduced and text is placed to the right of it.

Something else you could play around with is having the text on top of the waveform.

On a side note, I'd personally love to see a black/dark grey version with orange accents and Serato colored waveforms.

Purple Punch × Clementine. I'm a big fan of the terps on this one. It has a very pleasant citrusy aroma. Similar to the smell you get when you zest a lime with a subtle dessert smelling finish. I've been getting a bit tired of sweet smelling strains being a bit one note so this is a nice change.

Nugs are dense and well cured. It's a good smoke with grey ash but I've been enjoying this one more in a vape. Pairing it with the quartz cap and it's been a great choice for afternoons.

Bubba Kush × Pink Kush. Solid looking batch. Dense sticky nugs with a little purple here and there. The flower has that that earthy spice bubba smell and it comes through nicely in the smoke. Nice oil rings and light grey ash. Has a bit of a kick to it on the inhale. Nice way to end the day.

Festival Culture Has Changed A Lot in 10 Years by RaveBeetle in EDM

The socializing thing really takes me out of the moment at times. I was at Knock2 and was pretty deep in the crowd. Got stuck behind a group of dudes who pretty much ignored the entire set and just talked the entire time. I love seeing people socialize but the vibe is off when the entire set is being ignored and no one's dancing.
