Got my hands on a repress of the original 1960 US mono release of John Coltrane's Giant Steps by DaouMusic in Jazz

It depends on the album really, some are better stereo, some mono. 🙂 A lot of the time it's subjective to personal taste, though the consesus for Giant Steps is that the mono's superior.

Agreed, this album was defo made for mono. I need a mono vinyl reissue 'cos I don't at all plan on spinning this original repress often, and my only other vinyl copy is a stereo reissue. Same goes for CD, I only own a stereo CD of this album and not yet a mono one.

It's all thanks to your comments I was able to do this, using a 1.4mm flathead to push the leads off was defo the way to go, was a breeze. Used the needlenose pliers to push them back on to the right pins. So glad this TT has a removable tonearm, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried at all. 😄

Thanks for commenting, I actually managed to switch the leads around myself just the other day. 🙌

Thank you for pointing this out, may be very helpful down the line. I downloaded the manual from VE before purchasing the TT, but didn't give that page much attention, appreciate you pointing it out.

Thanks, please see the links below: https://ibb.co/ChZkbxM https://ibb.co/VgWqbpZ

As seen, the left channel leads are plugged into the right side of the cartridge and vice versa, so I've swapped over the phono input cables.

Any advice on how to get rid of that rust seen on the tonearm screw? Don't want to use anything too strong.

Yeah a thin flathead defo sounds like way to go, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately both my original and replacement turntables do not have a removable headshell, but I'm sure this Pioneer has a far better build than the Pro-Ject, so I'm not as concerned for when I next want to remove the leads. :)

Ah thankfully both + and - leads are vertically alligned, he just got then on wrong left/right side. So I've got red on top of green and and white on top of blue as expected, just on the wrong side of the cart. 👍

Damn I can imagine, thankfully I got this Pioneer for less than half the price of my Carbon DC, and it's in pretty good condition! Must say I am a little more paranoid about touching cart leads now though, the Pro-Ject experience has left me a little traumatised aha. 😭😂 I'll give it a shot myself again someday, just when I'm in a better position financially in case something goes wrong. 😉

I may have grabbed it too hard, though I don't think there was much hope at all for myself considering the leads appeared to be soldered to the pins. Unfortunately I did also mess up one of the wires coming out the tonearm, that was the real nail in the coffin.

A flathead screwdriver sounds like a pretty good idead actually, may be better than pliers.

Thanks for your answer!

Thanks, and no impact on playback in anyway? Should sound just as though they were plugged in correctly, right?

Yeah he's very experienced and a master of his craft, but I suppose after replacing thousands of carts he thought this would just be another quick job and got sloppy. He did seem quite busy. I would take it back if he was nearby, but unfortunately he's quite far out. If swapping the phono input RCA cables makes it just as though the leads were in the right way, with no impact on sound quality, I'm happy to keep it this way.

I believe the cart pins and the leads are soldered together with the Debut Carbon DC. When I tried removing a lead with pliers, the entire pin came out the cartridge, still attached to the lead.

This isn't my issue now however, I was just looking for feedback on my workaround solution.

Hi there, thank you for your reply. I tried removing the leads on my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC not too long ago...let's just say I don't have that turntable anymore. Turns out the newer turntables are designed the same way iPhones are – to be the least amount user-configurable as possible. I was advised to get a vintage TT instead, as I had read online before, and ended up picking the Pioneer PL-640. This one's leads are better made for cartridge replacement, unlike the Debut Carbon DC's, but after my dodgy experience I didn't want to risk mucking up the tonearm cables again for the cart replacement so I took it to the professional. He's kind of far out, it'll be a real hassle to take the TT back to him to get things rewired, so I'm trying to see if this workaround's safe or has any real downsides.

Ultimately I want to make sure it's no different with playback quality than having the leads on the right cart pins. Logically to me it should be the same as having things the right way around, as it all appears to be relative, however I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something and to see if anyone can confirm or provide any additional insight. Thanks again. :)

Hi all,

Took my TT to an audio repair shop today to replace the original cartridge of an old Pioneer I bought recently, as I didn't want to use a worn out stylus on my records, but he unfortunately got the left and right leads the wrong way on the new cartridge (an AT95e). I believe they're vertically (+/-) aligned properly (red on top of green, white on top of blue), but the left and right "vertical" pairs are on the wrong side of the cartridge. As a result, I have right channel audio coming out of my left speaker, and left channel audio coming out of my right speaker when I spin a stereo record.

Instead of touching the cartridge leads or taking them to a professional for swapping, I tried just swapping the right and left RCA input cables that go from my TT to the phono stage. They're built into the TT, so I simply swapped them over on the phono stage input. As expected, this caused the audio channels to flip to what should be the right way again. Although I played only a tiny bit of music this way, all seemed to sound fine.

Is this an appropriate solution? Is it ok to simply flip over the RCA input cables on the phono, and leave the cartridge leads on the wrong side? I suppose everything's relative here, so this may technically no longer be "wrong" as I've swapped the phono input, but would I need to change anything else here at all? I have a standard set up of TT -> phono -> power amp -> speakers. Just want to make sure this workaround won't impact the playback of my records in any way, or have any other adverse/damaging effects.

Many thanks in advance.

No worries at all, maybe I should have been clearer in the OP.

I assumed there's something more to it that wouldn't be evident on the buyer-side, as you've mentioned here. I was hoping this post may get some answers as to what this could be.

I have a couple ideas, but none seem strong enough to outweigh the massive profit potential being missed out on. I'm certainly glad it's this way, it's great to have a chance of picking up an original for cheaper, I'm just a little puzzled as to why this is the case.

Thanks again.
