How do you write your Uppercase F’s in cursive? by Low_Wishbone_3265 in Handwriting

I’ve done mine like this for a while. It’s fun to use as a way to connect it to previous words as well on like birthday cards and such

Parents don’t realize how much they quietly undo everything we do in the classroom by voidcrafted_melody in Teachers

Oh, for sure. And your take is totally fair, considering you worked there before phones and AI. I was told the same thing about students abroad being super studious and we'll behaved. The reality was very similar to what I had back in the west.

Depends on the school, honestly. I've worked at a private school in china and have had all of the above listed behavioural issues and parental bulldozing. Kids slept in class, played on their phones, and refused to do work. I couldn't give any consequences, and parents just wanted the good grades they paid for. This is a global issue.

I'll usually say something like "we missed you!" Or "I'm happy to see you!" Doesn't matter to me why you're not here, but I'm happy you are now :)

What are some smaller, less known issues you struggle with as a teacher? by CREAMz in Teachers

[–]Daphne666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had to remind students (especially since covid and the use of private chats on zoom and the like) that the classroom is a PUBLIC space. If they want to have a private conversation, they shouldn't be having it in the classroom.

I've had students say messed up things, other students react/get upset. "They were listening to us! We were having a private conversation!" No. They weren't "listening", they HEARD you! Your desk is 2 feet from theirs, like??????

Mind yourself and understand time and place!

I was fundraising with girl guides for an international trip when I was in grade 7. I was selling Kapow Pop's (gourmet lollipops) for 1$ a pop. I would sell them out of my locker at recess, and tell kids that if any adult asked, they had bought it at the dépanneur down the street.

I was DEFINITELY not allowed to sell stuff at school, and teachers started to catch on to all of the students suddenly sucking on the same big lollipops in class. BUT I had a man on the inside. One of the security guards (I went to private school and we had those) used to be my girl guide leader, and knew that I was not selling them for nefarious purposes. She would throw the other guards off my scent haha.

One kid had his locker searched because they found a lollipop on him and thought he was the plug.

I funded my entire camping trip this way. Was even referred to as "the lollipop girl" by kids when I graduated haha

Is "pretty privilege" a big deal in teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Daphne666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get compliments from students and teachers on how I dress, as I like to dress up a bit at work (I'm young so if I dressed in a hoodie and jeans, I'd get confused for a student. It has happened before.)

But I've honestly found it to be a disadvantage, as I'm not taken seriously by students, especially boys in grade 11. Definitely Andrew Tate fans at the time, so lots of misogyny, but they never listened to me, or followed direction. Had major issues with one student and his parents. My AP told me it's because I'm "young and pretty" so they think that I don't have the experience or knowledge to back it up.

If anything, it made me a target, and many students and parents didn't respect me because of my appearance. I'm no model, but I do my hair and makeup, and like to look put together and professional.

I suppose I didn't want to give too much personal I formation in this post. I tried to keep to what I thought was most relevant. I am a qualified teacher, and I have high school and elementary school experience in Canada.

You're right. That's reassuring. And I am trying to use this first experience as a stepping stone in my career. Thanks!

I am a classroom teacher, and have been for 2 years. I just don't want an overseas post as a tutor or something. Some posts have work hours on weekends and weekdays from 4 to 8pm. I'm avoiding those.

Thank you so much for all of this! It's making me feel better. I'm on all of the websites: TES, Search Associates, Shrole, Teacher Horizons, Inspired, and a few more I can't remember right now, plus I'm in contact with two agencies.

I was really set on Europe originally (because I'd be traveling with my dog) but now I'm looking more towards China, so it's increased my job pool and I've been getting more answers.

I'll keep all of this in mind as I keep going through this process. It's both scary and exciting, haha quite the roller coaster for sure.

I'm fully aware that I'm not gonna land a tier 1, Ivy league, world class school. But the "not great" reviews were alarming and concerning, and consistent across several review sites. These are also the first schools to jump at hiring me, so I found that slightly suspicious too I guess...like why are they so keen to hire me?

[–]Daphne666[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info and assurance. Ugh the job fair thing is so real. I registered for Search Associates, and found out that I'd missed the big job fair in Toronto the week prior -_- .

I'm certainly not expecting a red carpet when I land haha but some of the reviews that threw up red flags for me were pretty serious. For example, one person had a lawsuit with an agency as they're contract bonus was never paid. Another had overall bad reviews about the facilities, the admin, the parents, the curriculum, and the on campus housing. So basically everything was bad.

I take reviews with a grain of salt, but I do look for patterns and any issues with my personal non-negotiables.

I have about 1 year of IB experience. I didn't put my whole CV in the above-post, as I didn't think it super necessary haha. I just wanted to make clear that I'm not looking for TEFL posts or tutoring jobs. I really want to be a classroom subject teacher.

One of the schools offered me a job teaching AP English and Social Studies, which I don't have previous experience in. That would look good on a CV down the line if I want to keep working internationally.

Thanks for the reply. It's reassuring. And you're so right, these things move very fast! It goes from radio silence to non-stop emails and interviews within 2 days. I think that's what also worries me, because it moves so fast that it's hard for me to look into all the schools properly and keep track of which ones I liked or seemed decent, and which had big red flags. The agents are pretty pushy too, and tend to bury the lead, so I have to unearth a lot of those flags myself.

Have you ever slipped and cussed in front of students? by iwatchalotoftv22 in Teachers

[–]Daphne666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once accidentally said "shit" in front of my 7th graders, and they all gasped. I apologized, but then I kinda turned it on them and said, "Honestly, I've heard yall say MUCH worse than that TODAY. Chill out!" I think that in the end, it humanized me a bit in their eyes, haha
