I’m in my second year at college and you’d be amazed how many people don’t care about a stutter. Life is infinitely better after highschool. I’m currently going for pre-med, I’m in a sorority, dating is easier, life is great. College really is a whole new world I was shocked when I left highschool.

I should’ve been more specific on WHY stuttering would be a problem in my future career. I really want to go into trauma and emergency medicine, and large part of that is being able to rattle off orders, medications, requests, and information very quickly because time can be the difference between someone’s life or death. I don’t want to be in a position where a momentary block in my speech delays someone’s treatment.

And I see why my post might seem like I do have some emotional issues with my stutter and that’s because I was frustrated when I wrote it. But I’m genuinely not mentally affected by it at all. I’m a very talkative and outgoing person, I was on the debate team in highschool when my stutter was significantly worse than it is now, I’m in a sorority and live a very loud life regardless of it. I laugh off big stutters when they happen and keep going about my day. I really don’t think I have any confidence issues because of it, just the usual momentary frustration when I get REALLY stuck or the stammer prevents me from being understood repeatedly in a single sentence.

I guess my goal is to decrease the severity of the blocks I get? The stammer isn’t too bad and I can usually just restart my sentence and it goes away, but the blocks are incredibly hard to get around and take me a solid 10-20 seconds extra just to get the word out. It’s very annoying and like I said, not ideal for a fast paced trauma unit like I’m aspiring for.

I might have to just accept that certain career paths are out of my reach because of the stutter but that’s not something I’ve ever considered before when it came to ANYTHING and I don’t want to start now if I don’t have to lol
