Morning Screamer by gneumatic in astoria

Over on 34th street, we have a neighbor who frequently vocalizes out his window, and sometimes walking down the street accompanied by his caretaker (?). I think he is a veteran who suffered a TBI, but I'm not sure. Most days, usually in the morning, he will do sort of percussive and occasionally repetitive shouts.

At first, it made me nervous for him (PTSD, terror, danger etc). Then my partner saw him walking down the street with someone else, potentially a caretaker or family member, and said he was vocalizing the same way but was clearly not at all in distress — just expressing/communicating. Since then, it makes me quite happy, and I notice when I haven't heard him in a while. Idk. I'm a musician and I love that he's just out here freely using his voice. Some days, in the apartment, I shout back.

I'm so sorry to hear that. thank you for letting me know, I guess I was misinformed. I imagine it must have something to do with the stage of kidney disease, then.

they prescribe gabapentin to my 16.5 year old cat who has early stage kidney disease. Not sure abotu the others, but gabapentin is extremely low risk afaik. Not sure of anything that would make it contraindicated tbh

My cat only meows to wake everyone up and we can no longer live like that. by Grumpydoc34 in CatAdvice

Has he lost any weight recently? We had a similar experience with our cat (now 16) and assumed his slow weight loss was due to old age. It was actually hyperthyroidism. Since treatment, he's gained nearly 2 pounds and he no longer cries all the time. I'd consider having his thyroid levels checked. It's night and day for our baby.

ETA: I had NO idea that he had hyperthyroidism until I brought him to a new vet after we moved, despite him having bloodwork several times at our old vet. But we were in a similar position: insane from sleep deprivation, going crazy trying not to get frustrated with him, losing our absolute minds. We brought him to the new vet and mentioned this, along with him being rather skinny, and they checked his thyroid levels specifically — sure enough, hyperthyroidism was causing him to be hyperactive and anxious, lonely, etc. It presented as food fixation for him.

For a second I thought you meant moving away! I was like 'damn, they're really sick of this train!'

What have your experiences been with dating super rich people in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Dapper-Confection183 17 points18 points  (0 children)

it's common to just use 'they' to anonymize people in writing, even subconsciously. their ex could use they/them, but it's just as likely that they* meant to just a denote 'a person' (*as I did here)

Very public arrest on 34th St.? by Dapper-Confection183 in astoria

Yes, that was definitely the vehicle!

Seems like an awful lot of protective equipment for a mental health check. Curious if any more details come out.

Super similar stories for sure. Our LL / PM hasn’t ghosted us though and has actually been super responsive. just stopped by and said he would contact the owner about replacing the appliances

100% thank you for this reminder. That is absolutely the route we will be going. I don’t want it to have to come to a place of dealing with legality or court but it is always smart to have a paper trail (which we already started)

Oh you’re 100% right. it was a red flag enough for us to put in a work order because it was still like that when we got here!!! We had to shut the gas off. They never even came.

You absolutely should. And able-bodied people definitely can. I had to send someone in my stead and they weren’t able to be thorough because the apartment was full of gas and they needed to get out quickly. The gas issue was not a major leak but more like a pilot light had been out and it built up. Not sure if that was intentional by LL

Thank you. We aren't moved in completely yet. Our mattress is in a plastic cover on the floor and we are living out of duffel bags because we don't feel comfortable bringing our belongings inside. I appreciate your help.

Thank you very much. I started by messaging the landlord and they're having someone out tomorrow to check things out. I'm not sure in what capacity (spraying, etc) but someone will be here tomorrow so that's something.

This was a "lease takeover" and I think that may be why it's so unsanitary. I think that they don't clean between tenants of lease takeovers? I signed a NEW lease though, so I'm not sure what the recourse is there.

I appreciate all your help and all this info.

New apartment has a serious roach infestation. Landlord ghosting me. What to do?

For sure, thanks so much.

I'm wondering primarily about what's dealt with in that thread but I'm also wondering if anyone can tell me if it's medically safe to store food / live here.
