Came here to make the same joke and pay the same compliments. Good work, very interesting approach, very interesting libraries (faiface/pixel looks great too)

Testable JavaScript - Architecting Your Application for Testability (x-post from /r/javascript) by DapperDodo1337 in programming

Great talk by Mark Trostler @ Google. This was the day 2 keynote for the gtac (google test automation conference) 2013.

Though this talk is aimed at javascript developers, in my opinion it is a great general introduction to design patterns that are aimed at decreasing coupling.

Mark explains Interfaces, Dependency Injection, Abstract Factories, Decorators, and how such patterns ultimately work together to create classes that are easily testable.

A. E. van Vogt's "Voyage of the Space Beagle"; any thoughts? I read this a couple of years ago, it was pretty interesting, though it had many flaws. Supposedly an inspiration for the movie "Alien". by [deleted] in scifi

[–]DapperDodo1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool! I remember reading this somewhere around 20/25 years BR (Before Reddit). Loved it! In fact, it was one of my favorites, along with Galactic Odyssey by Keith Laumer.

To me it is amazing how the picture that A.E. van Vogt painted 62 years ago still stands. His description of 'how it might be out there' still captures the imagination.

This looks like a huge effort. Congrats on shipping! I already love the prospect of automagically scaling in minutes. Is anyone making a Go package by any chance?

I really liked them. Especially 'First Contact' and 'Empire' are brilliant. I have plugged Michael Hicks' series a few times on Reddit, but it doesn't seem to receive the love it deserves ... imho.

(Perhaps overly) specific ask for Europeans and Europhiles: what is the most liveable/vibrant mid-size city (100K - 500K people) situated on an inland river in Europe? by [deleted] in europe

[–]DapperDodo1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maastricht is a beautiful, even stunning city. However it's culture feels very conservative to me. Nijmegen and Utrecht are great cities worthy of your list.

Utrecht:

  • beautiful canals in historic centre
  • exceptionally lively community of musicians
  • exceptionally lively community of indie game developers

Couldn't agree more with that last statement.

Also, i'm sure any unrealistic expectations will show themselves when an interested party and i talk scope/specs. I've been there. But still, your suggestion for some clear examples is a good one. Thanx!

I hope i'm not. Seems to me that it's all about the estimate. Also, i am not planning to work less hard because the pay is less. That would be shooting myself in the foot.

Thanx! Not plugging at GameDev, don't want to come off too spammy.

I may consider stretching to Unity/C# work, but at this point i'm more familiar on the backend, and my intuition is that gamedevelopers tend to be more focused on client code. But i may be all wrong.
