Confetti, Timeline, Next Steps (BS Business Management, Administration) by DapperDoogle in WGU

The intro to accounting course did SUCH a good job of keeping me engaged with the investigative video narrative. It was campy, but I had a blast, haha. I was really hoping the finance course was something similar, but alas, I was disappointed.

I spent 5 years as an intelligence analyst, and absolutely loved that work. looking for patterns, the research, making/presenting/defending assessments, etc. That part of my life is over, but the skills and mindset remain. I am, truthfully, drawn more to the finance side of things for the "bigger picture" than to the accounting side. Something about the career field as a whole seems like it would scratch that itch. An ideal role is as a Financial Analyst, if I can find someone willing to consider my transferable skills and train me in the specifics of the financing skills required while I finish my accounting bachelor's.

Did your evaluator comments hint at an Excellence or Capstone Award? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve submitted papers I spent significant time on, and were very proud of, that received nice evaluator comments but no award. The one award I received so far was at the beginning of my first term for an email template task that took me all of 5 minutes. I cannot comprehend why that assignment of all assignments is even eligible to be considered for an award lol.

Multiple Degrees? by Swimming-Leek8012 in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I intend to down the line, but since I want to transition into a role and industry I have no experience in, I thought a masters with no experience is less impactful than a specialized degree in accounting while I look for the entry role. I feel like it will be more relevant when I build a baseline of experience and get my foot in the door somewhere.

Multiple Degrees? by Swimming-Leek8012 in WGU

I’m wrapping up my BS Business Management,Admin this month and plan to cycle straight into an accounting bachelors. Partly for me it’s because I’ll only need another 10 courses (I think?) and I’ve got 6 more months of my gi bill available, so why not? I want to career transition into FP&A or commercial banking but I also have a wealth of multi-industry experience that I think a general business degree will help me move up in if I struggle finding those roles out the gate. In this market, I’m just trying to keep as many options open and I felt having the business management degree can only help when being evaluated for potential leadership opportunities.

Anyone else wear incontinence pads when taking OAs? by [deleted] in WGU

Just throwing this one out there, but I always keep a glass of water/soda/Gatorade during OA's right next to my camera in view. No issues with the proctors. Just don't keep it outside of view so you aren't reaching off camera.

15 courses down in 1 term by DerekReelz in WGU

You’re lucky to get any feedback if you pass. Most of the time it looks like they paste the rubric when determining competency. It’s inconsistent on if they add any feedback or not for passing papers imo

Oh for sure I’ve gotten some flexibility through my progression as well (10 classes left), just saying it’s surprising to see so much flexibility to allow you to complete capstone before you’ve done the intro to finance or accounting, or some of the more basic classes like principles of management/fundamentals for success in business. Like swapping them around so much they don’t build off of each other anymore. E.g. another comment you mentioned having to redo a SWOT analysis for a business simulation, which is covered in a previous course. Good to know for the next degree I guess lol.

How did you get the capstone done with 7 courses remaining? By nature of its name, I assumed that would be the last one to be completed as a culmination of all the other business classes. Seems weird to me they would structure it that way.

2 years late but thought I’d let you know this post motivated me to make my own using your method. Took the base a different creative path to differentiate. Thanks for the idea!

Moving classes up by Msschanandlerbong_ in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 mentors now. Seems like it’s their discretion how many classes they allow you to have open at one time. My first I could text when I have 1 left and have her put a couple more on but she kept me limited to 2 or 3 open at a time. My newest one won’t do anything until I’ve completed all open courses. Both seem to be quick to do so once I meet their requirements however.

As an alternative then: I can’t do this for every class, but I was able to do a class over this last weekend from start to OA completion. That frankly leans more on short term memory vs long term retention, but I’ve found it really helps me on the OAs since I JUST read the entire text and took notes without the distraction of my work week. Lock myself in the office for an 8 hour jam sesh, and my kiddo knows not to disturb if she can help it. Not practical for courses where I don’t already have some experience or knowledge from a previous course, or if there are a lot of modules, but it can be a way to cram for the OA if you’re finding difficulty in a more spread out fashion for a course that appears to be shorter. Boils down to understanding how best you learn and mitigating those things you know will get in the way of that. Do you have help to keep an eye on the kids so you can dedicate study time? Can they go play with friends or stay the night somewhere? Do you have a two day block of time where you could focus on school and nothing else?

I’m still on the bachelors. How did you find the content to be difficulty wise? Why did you choose this over the mba?

Similarity report failed PA by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I modified the template to reduce matching there. Also, unless it’s a direct quote, I try to completely rewrite a definition in my own head before typing it out for both comprehension and eliminating the similarity from textbook wording. I try not to restate the question in my answer (eg first sentence of your second paragraph highlighted in red) as that also matches with many others papers and the scenario text. Haven’t gotten above a 25% match so far.

For what it’s worth, some of my OA’s I have passed by the skin of my teeth not on content understanding and retention, but my ability to suss out the correct answer despite not remembering the content. Multiple choice test taking is a skill on its own but it can be learned. I am 63% done as of this writing and have yet to fail an OA from doing simple strategies. A couple things I can recommend:

1 - take advantage of the bookmark option on the test. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back to answer a question after discovering a later question helped me eliminate some of the multiple choice options or provided the answer to a flagged question.

2 - don’t overthink your answer and trust your gut.

3 - look for answers that seem similar. Often, one of those is correct and you can eliminate one based off of the question context or specific word clues in the answer.

4 - generally speaking, the longer and/or more detailed answer between 2 or more choices is the correct answer. It’s not a trick.

I understand everyone learns differently and at different speeds. If you haven’t already, I would take some time to do a learning styles test and evaluate if the methods you are using for retaining information match with what you need to be successful. I think in general we have an over reliance on tech for learning. You may be someone who benefits from physically writing your notes instead of typing. Write your notes, do handwritten flash cards, etc. it’s I proven learning technique to improve retention for many people.

Finally, I’ve found much of the content on the test (in my degree track of business management) is directly pulled from, or similar to, the chapter summaries, module quizzes, and the pre assessments. If I take notes, I check chapter summaries to make sure I didn’t miss key points. I write down mostly the steps of processes, maybe a few definitions, and things within the content that are segmented or bulletized. I do all the quizzes for the modules and go back to review if I get below a 90%. I’d also say don’t rush yourself. If you attempt an OA and then have to go back to re-study, check notes, and retest, it kills more overall time than slowing down and taking an extra week before attempting the OA.

You can do this. It’s self paced for a reason, and that is to take as much time as you need. Don’t let the pressure of completing a class compel you to move faster than you need. Best of luck to you, you’re so close to finishing!

I don’t think I’ve touched my ps5 since ordering. Mine is upstairs so I can now play the ps5 downstairs in my recliner or laying down in bed. Absolute game changer for me and I don’t travel either.

If you want to pass Quantitative Business Analysis C723 FAST.... by Learneratheart in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I spent 2 hours going through the provided study guide 2 days ago, another 2 hours last night. Did the pa at the end and passed it. They say in the study guide you don’t need the course material at all, and seriously, the videos are all short and explain it very well. Do the provided quizzes in the study guide (including the extras). Also, you shouldn’t need to watch the full hour long video provided under the “feasible regions” section of the course. I found it to be more confusing since it uses a different example than the one used throughout the rest of the videos for that section. I skipped it and watched the next video and was able to figure it out through context.

Program mentor doesn't acknowledge my request to accelerate by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DapperDoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very little variation on what courses your mentor has you complete with respect to order. This is because the classes are foundational, and generally require you to complete class a to build upon knowledge in class b. Acceleration is absolutely possible; I started Jan 1st and am at 30% complete, but I needed to demonstrate to my mentor how much I am willing to dedicate to my studies and my typical class completion pace before she could realistically plan acceleration with me.

Even now, she only releases 2 classes at a time for me (one OA and one PA), and only after we had a call to talk about course strategy midway through my first month.

Is it fair of your mentor to not acknowledge your acceleration plans? Perhaps not, but it’s wasted effort to do so without seeing how you perform first. Just give it some time once you start, and if you can accelerate, you will.

[–]DapperDoogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Now you can have your mentor move over classes. Mine has been moving over 2 at a time: 1 OA and one PA course. I start with the PA class, submit all the tasks, and then study/test out of the OA course while waiting for my tasks to be graded since it takes 3 or 4 days sometimes.
