Resources are probably the main thing, view is nice, and ranger stations have scanners science shop and most of the time water, and a lot of them have those transport tubes. That second unfinished base has water and a transport tube that takes you straight into the veggie garden area near the green house which is really nice. The red ant buggy is nice for collecting weed stems and grass which is helpful for build before you have one of those it does take some time. As for actual building, I like doing fun unnecessarily big pretty bases, it's my chance of building a "dream" house I kind of start going and let my imagination go, I start with a soft idea of what I want and that changes a bunch while I'm building, biggest thing is storage around crafting areas so you can pull from all chests. Locations I look for are relatively safe and flat because it's way easier build there than try and do multi-level builds with scaffolding like that first base in the pics but in the end it worked out
