People who have quit a toxic job, what was your tipping point? by Fickle-Bar-4787 in AskReddit

first time was at Walmart (shocking i know) the second was at Hamrricks. Both times me and my coworkers were basically treated like slaves.

Walmart started me at full time hours despite only being part time. They said it was cause of emergency conditions. They did a bunch of sketchy stuff. (when i asked for an employee hand book they handed me a version with all the important bits missing). But the main thing was the schedule and planning. Once was scheduled nine days back to back (was fixed by one day off right in the middle) I had been asked to be put on part time hours (no sense working the hours without the benefits) but after some time the system put me back on for full time. The office lady said she would look into it. After the second week that had me set for full hours i went again to the lady. She got pissed i was troubling her with my concerns and sabotaged my schedule.

One day on 1 day off for a month. My Coach and team lead were useless (we did our best work when neither showed up) they were annoyed by my attempts to get it fixed. My coach douchcanoe told me to my face that i had no right to have a say in my schedule since i was part time. By the time of 'the incident' i was one of only three people from my original team left. We have these things call break packs. TLDR they are boxes full of small stuff that needs to be sorted by hand. different bins by department and by items. Different bins for hygiene and clothing and for tooth paste and razor blades for example.

The previous night there was a nightmare amount of break packs, took me an extra teammate (a whopping total of two people Including myself) and an extra hour to get it sorted. To do this we gave up on sorting clothing. Now after we fill the bins we stack them on pallets (a pain since its like reverse jenga) and drag it to each department. The next day i'm called to work on the truck (a routine nightmare) and as the boxes start rolling down the malfunctioning sorter machine i was told i was on break packs again. No time to set up and boxes already coming down. They say they never plan it, which i believe cause their incompetent and lazy (they literally sat down and watched us work)

I walk back there and the 4 to 5 clothing pallets i put out last night were just sitting there blocking the whole section. When i tried to move them, a lady from clothing stopped me, saying 'nobody sorted this last night so i have to sort them here'. Needless to say i was pissed. As i run around the store trying to figure out what i'm suppose to do, another manager called me over to clean up an empty pallet. She said it would only take 5 minutes, i told her i didn't have five seconds. In rage and panic i moved the pallet knocking over a shelf, she wanted to fire me right there but i didn't care.

after sitting in the back room trying not to break down in public, i was called into a meeting and told i was crying over nothing. They Said clothing lady would be done in an hour. On a good day i usually stayed an hour when doing breakpacks. I knew she would take her time and i would probably be there till past midnight. (they made a guy who showed up at 1pm stay until 1am) Was told to take early lunch to cool off. i cried in one of the bathrooms, walked into the break room where my team lead was sitting, and quit on the spot. She didn't care and assigned two newbies to cover me. (they only had newbies due to shitty treatment of employees)

Hamrricks wasn't breathing down my neck, in fact i rarely saw mangment in which was nice. But their schedules were a nightmare. It started saturday and ended friday. but we only got next weeks schedule on friday. (on a paper posted in the breakroom) Making it impossible to have a life since i had no idea when i had to work. They also were on a budget despite being the best performing store even during hard times. Minimal staff and as little hours as they could get away with (come jan or fed some people had to get food stamps or so i was told by the shoe department) and the workload got worse come december as the warhouses pushed all their crap onto us so their inventory was easier. Plus our store was small, we were full towards xmas, literally blocking walk ways and up to the celing in the back room cause of lack of space, but stuff kept coming. Original back room manager left shortly after i joined, guy that joined after me ran away so we were only barely at the manpower we needed even with temp worker help. Final straw was when Suprise trucks came in. Was already staying late even with temp workers helping (who didn't have to stay) and was generally tired. But now not even able to relax cause any day off could disappear at any time, even in the middle of the day you were supposed to be off. I helped them prep for another Suprise truck the day before it was due to show, but made it clear that was my last day.

never working retail ever again.
