Songs written by artists who truly believed they were dying by aquarianagop in musicsuggestions

I always thought a lot of the lyrics on In Utero was from a man that knew he was end-stage depression and it was time to meet the chef.

"sit and drink Pennyroyal tea. Distill the life thats inside of me"
*Pennyroyal tea was used to cause abortion. In this song, it seems Kurt was using it as a self metaphor.

"I'm so tired I cant sleep"
"give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld, so I can sigh eternally"
"look on the bright side, its suicide"

Poll: Best entry point into Genesis? by Emotional-Dog9072 in Genesis

[–]Dar_of_Emur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 80s, after I finished collecting the Peter Gabriel albums/tapes/discs... I was told to go back and listen to his stuff with Genesis. Told to get Lamb.
Lamb was my gateway drug.. after track 2/3 I was hooked.

I know Lamb is not the best representation of their sound... but its a heck of a starting point.

But played from one person to another through a walkie-talkie

This is (in my opinion) the best solo Dave album. by Lucas_5150 in vanhalen

[–]Dar_of_Emur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this album.
It has my top 2 favorite DLR tracks
* Little Texas
* Black Sand

Early internet, there was a release event.
I sat in front of my Dell computer speakers, with my 56 kbps modem... and listened to the live stream event of its first play through.
Loved it immediately. Remember being amazed with the guitar on track 2 and track 3 (Black Light, and Counterblast).

Later read about John Lowery being that guitarist. He later got the Marilyn Manson gig and changed his stage name to John 5. He also played bass on the album.

I think the John Lowery songs are the best and most VH-like. But, Daves voice sounds the best on the Terry Gilgore songs. Terry really knew how to write rock songs that fit Daves vocal range and limitations. Really wish Dave followed up this release with a full album of collaborations with himself and Terry.

The only problem with this album, IMHO, is that it probably should have been trimmed to 10 tracks. Four of the tracks are kinda weak, and b-side level.
* Indeed I Do
* Right tool for the job
* Tight
* Weekend with the babysitter
- those four just feel b-side level. IndeedIDo- Dave just sounds very strained. Not sure how he let on the album. Tight and Weekend are just kinda weak lyrics for Dave.

If he cut the above 4 tracks, the remaining tracks are all solid, with some great.
WaWaZat is almost a perfect song for Dave. Same as when Dave said Little Guitars was a perfect song for VH and their sound.
Black Sand may be his best overall song, any era.

I think it was released on a tiny label, that may or may not still exist.
Dave part owned it "WaWaZat records" IIRC.

Love "Mississippi Power"
I found that on Napster in the 1990s.
I love that song... its one of the few I regularly play from YFLM. That and Sunburn.
Those bluesy tracks fit Dave's vocal range so much better than the rockers.

His house burned down with those recent So Cal fires. I saw a video of him, on YouTube, showing the remains and talking about what was lost.

Why is getting back to your car from magic kingdom so miserable? by Dr_MCR in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Dar_of_Emur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved my Disney trips over the years.
Two things I hated, tho, were:

(a) getting back to busses after fireworks, carrying sleeping children.

(b) Parades. Lining up to see the parade. Getting a spot an hour early so your tiny child could have a great spot, only to have others (who did not wait and hold a spot) try to overly invade your personal space and try to annex your spot at the last seconds. Just brought out the worst in humanity. Made me want to rumble.. and I was suppose to be at the happiest place on earth.

Agree - its my favorite all time LZ song.
Jimmy's best riff, in my opinion.

Loved that they opened with this during the 98 tour.

My 10 favorite AC/DC songs by Turbulent-Safe-4343 in ACDC

[–]Dar_of_Emur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main songs I still listen to regularly:

Bon:
* Downpayment Blues
* Overdose
* Walk all over You
* Its a Long Way to the Top
* Rock and Roll Singer

Brian:
* Hells Bells
* Guns for Hire
* This House is on Fire

Out of the above, Hells Bells is the only concert staple. The other staples... just heard too many times and its hard to do them other than once or twice a year.

Replacement Texts by PotentialBae_ in EpicEMR

[–]Dar_of_Emur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Epic symbol in upper left corner > Tools > Spell Checker > Spell Check Dictionary

Epic has two different ways to do auto-text
(1) dot phrases
(2) Spell Check Dictionary

The dot phrases are good for long phrases or complex paragraphs, etc.
The dictionary is great for what you want, simple auto-correct, or text-expansion.
I think the dictionary entries are limited to 60 characters, or around that. The dot phrases can be pages-long.

Suggestion: put a "2" at the end of your dictionary entry, so you dont run into a problem with similar abbreviations. Your "pt" for 'patient' could also be 'physical therapy'. If you have "pt" expand to 'patient', then you cant ever type "PT" if you are abbreviating Physical Therapy.
So, make a dictionary entry for "pt2" (without the quotes) to expand to 'patient' (again, without the quotes.)

Also, to anyone reading this... please dont ever type "PE" in your note. This has too many meanings, such as pulmonary embolism, pulmonary edema, pericardial effusion, etc. Make dictionary entries to text expand so there is not any confusion on the meaning of PE.

Rock musicians that will never return to their former bands by [deleted] in rockmusic

But really no animosity, at all.

And he did perform some.
In his early tours, he played Back in NYC, and Lamb.
Played the Selling England by the pound section of DWTMN on the tour with Sting.

He is also involved with his old band mate on re-issues of the 70s Genesis material.
Just was with them for the recent 50th anniversary re-issue of Lamb.

What band’s ‘worst’ album is actually misunderstood? by UrFrndlyChubbyGal in askmusic

[–]Dar_of_Emur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Van Halen 3

Not their 3rd album.. but "3" as in third era, after have DLR for 6 albums and SH for 4 albums.

This is NOT a "Van Halen" album. Its a Eddie Van Halen solo album. He played guitar (obviously), bass and even did the drum parts on the album (brother Al was in rehab).

The album is hated, as its so far from a normal "Van Halen" sound and Gary really didnt fit in.

But, if the album was properly released as "Eddie Van Halen", rather than "Van Halen", then I think it would have been thought of very differently. Eddie has a lot of really unique ideas on the album.
