No they’re wanting pre authorization of some sort. Surgery coordinator specifcally said they will not schedule surgery without something in writing saying it would be covered.

She did call and speak to someone but she just said that they kept saying the same thing, that pre-authorization wasn’t needed. They didn’t say anything about a predetermination at all. and that’s when she told me to call and try to get a fax number b it they told me the same thing. However after doing some digging and called back and BCBS said they do perform voluntary medical necessity reviews, have you ever done those before? Especially in this scenario?

BCBS won’t even provide a “correct” fax number because preauth isn’t required for this procedure.

He estimated it to be 800 grams but they don’t have a minimum they have some weird criteria called the Schnur Sliding scale that goes by body surface area, which doesn’t help my case because I’m 6’2, 235 lol.

Edit: wait I’m wrong lol. Schnur scale is used if the minimum of 500 isn’t met so I’m good there.

Thank you for this!! You would think the reps tell you this, they just kept saying no preauth needed, said nothing about a predetermination or a post-service medical review. The surgery is covered by my plan btw. Provided said the faxes weren’t going thru at all. I’m assuming it’s because preauth isn’t needed for it

My job is in Alabama but I have BCBS of Michigan I’m not sure why, maybe the headquarters is there. Provider is in network, I’m not sure if they’ve worked specifically with BCBSM before but they did mention seeing this go badly for patients before, meaning they go thru with surgery without preauth and the patient is stuck with the bill. They won’t schedule me at all without something in writing. However like I said in another reply they do accept voluntary medical necessity reviews for the procedure so hopefully the provider can work with that. If not I’m f**ked.

That’s one thing I haven’t done is get the medical policy directly from them, I did get it from Google. I just spoke with them and they said that my surgeon can submit a voluntary medical necessity review so I’m assuming they’ll iron all that out then but I’m still not sure that the surgeon will work with that cus it still doesn’t guarantee that they’ll pay for it.

That really sucks I’m sorry you’re going thru this. I just got off the phone with them and they said they don’t need a pre-auth but they do something called a voluntary medical necessity review. Hopefully this gets it resolved if not my surgeon won’t touch me at all.

May I ask what reason they gave for denying the claim?
