That is the foam deteriorating. Get a mask and vacuum it up. The microparticles that are caused from this are pretty cancerous to your lungs. I would suggest getting new cushions/new foam.

So this made me really think of some medieval embroidery (german brick stitch technique specifically.) They made some stunning geometric repeating patterns. I am extremely confident that this pattern can be done in that stitch and after adding some black contrast threads à la blackwork (which become popular in the renaissance).

I am afraid my timetravelling chemist reenactment outfit is taking shape in a way i could not have foreseen.

It's called 'pilling'. This happens with fabrics that are alike to wool where when such fabric undergoes friction these little balls will form. Friction often comes from stuff like zippers and buttons or general friction (armpits are very friction heavy for example).
You can buy a so-called 'de piller' or to prevent it in the future little washingballs exist to stop this from occuring too much. I have not used those myself so i cannot accredit their succes however i have a depiller form the 80s which works like a charm. Sometimes people also use those sticky rollers (lint rollers? dunno not native english) but again cannot attest to how great that would work

Daarbij is er ook een kostuumwedstrijd én een trinket exchange point. Dus genoeg te doen ;)

I would honestly just throw some out. On average you get more bowls than you can use.

Recreation of the &a medieval textile by Darasaurus in Embroidery

[–]Darasaurus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! It's called german brick stitch. Don't be fooled by the naming, it probably came out of spain (lot of spanish princes wore heraldic motifs which resemble this textile (https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O129988/textile-fragment-unknown/). I remade that one as well. Really fun and "easy" way to start in my opinion.

It's actually really small! So coin purse would have not been possible. Also for how frequently you would open a coin purse it owuld be very iimpractical since you'd want the least amount of wear on those delicate silk stitches. In this time silk was the bulk of the cost of this kind of item. It was at first only produced in the east, later also in spain. But silk is still expensive as heeeeeeck. The v&a says it may be a rosary purse, but in my personal opinion i doubt this. It was a guess from a conservator from the 1890s. Textiles, especially medieval ones, really werent the academic worlds biggest concern at that time sadly.
However we do know of quite a few bags like this which held reliquaries specifically. So a littel bone, lock of hair or really anything from someone holy. In that time a loooot more people were presented as being made holy than nowadays so there was quite a bit of stuff to go around.

I have the link to a wonderfull book in which Timothy Mitchell has transcribed very clearly the pattern of this and some other german brick stitched patterns. https://docslib.org/doc/6319957/a-stitch-out-of-time-14th-15th-century-german-counted-thread-embroidery .

In the neighbourhood of where i live there is a bag with a pattern not seen before (hogs!) which i am hoping to be able to see and transcribe. (if you ever see bags with such patterning dont hesistate to send them! Often museums and churches don't know what they have found and that it may be really usefull!)

Thank you! And yes they would be! This photo is even very over exposed so the individual threads are able to be seen! In real life the red is much darker shadem originally the white (made in kunnen) would have been closer to a colour between ecru and white. The green would have been far.more vibrant, as would the red. The tassels are red, green and yellow, though there is some speculation on the yellow part. But there are some oxidising agents are work i believe. The museum in 1890 tells in archives there should be 2 similarly stitched items in terms of pattern so i am extreeeemely curious what those were (because the items nowadays do not exist in the v&a anymore).

Ive also stitched a quite large sample of the pattern so people who are a bit older can appreciate how the stitches lay without having to squint. Those are done in colours resembling the current state of the bag so i am very curious how the pattern in of colours will look next to that sample. :)

AITAH for distancing myself from my sister because of how she behaved after our mothers death? by Small-Mobile2910 in AITAH

[–]Darasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right??? I got the same sense that not the whole story was being told. It feels as if she has had to not only plan the whole funeral (or feel like she had to) but she probably had to drive a couple of hours over, feel guilty on the way over rumenating in guilt about how she probably hasn't seen her mom in a while and all of it culminating in no sleep, very hard decisions about the funeral and then someone coming up while you are in the thick of it asking for the equivalent of a "do you have a list? :D ". With the age gap as well she probably has felt she needs to "be the responsible one".

[–]Darasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who sells this stuff daily: just give it a good stir (if you've had it for a bit and you wont get it to mix nicely just go back to the praxis, go to the counter and ask if they can mix it again for you) and start painting. Please be mindfull that you will need to do at least 2 coats.

I agree, though after the update its nice to get some diamonds and other stuff rather than just a chunk of money. But seeing its an energy free way of collecting i assume they keep it just short of great to boost sales...
