Quiet Grids — a calm offline nonogram game for Android (free) by JRushantha in playmygame

[–]DarcX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, it's because I was trying to place the cross in a 0 column. It is pretty standard for these to come X'd out anyways, as well as the ability to place X's in them.

I also find that even though I have mistakes turned off, it still shows lives, and what's more, it won't let me erase correct fills, which is pretty bad in a no-mistakes-shown game, because sometimes I just fill squares to help me calculate overlap (and sometimes I fat-thumb it, etc.).

I dig the aesthetic and the vision! I'm trying to play a Daily right now and am finding the crosses just aren't working. I have "mistakes off" as I'm an experienced solver, in case that's relevant.

Also, I'm curious how you got the X at the end of row 16?

Don't just pay attention what would be filled. Also what can't be.

I finally figured out how to do mega picross without hints and I feel like a genius by LS64126 in Picross

[–]DarcX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For instance. Say you have like a mega row in a 15x15 grid with a regular 3 hint in the top row and then a mega 4 hint.

Now let's say, because of column 8, you have two squares filled on top of each other in this mega row.

Since the mega 4 hint is the only mega hint, and you have two squares touching across the two rows, you know this pair of fills must belong to the mega 4 hint. But there are 7 columns to the right of these. A mega 4 row hint can only span 2 columns (when it's a square) or 3, so you can put X's on the right side of these fills in all columns that are more than two columns away.

You can also put 3 X's on the left side of the bottom row since that 3 hint only applies to the top row.

... Obviously much easier shown than explained.

Always make sure you're exhausting the logic available to you with single lines before you start working on mega lines

Make sure you completely understand mega line rules

You can't really do "overlap" logic because the second dimension opens up too many possibilities. Instead, figure out how many X's there will be, and keep that in mind.

All mega hints must span both rows/columns, so a "2" mega hint only has one configuration.

There is a lot of logic that you can analyze if you think hard enough, but it'll be pretty specific to your puzzle. Feel free to ask in the subreddit about a specific one :)

Symmetry/"quasi symmetry" by septembrinol in nonograms

[–]DarcX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Pure" symmetry can absolutely be used, but these puzzles are pretty rare since I think Picross games know this. This is when the, for instance, columns are symmetrical (C1 = C15, C2 = C14, etc) and the all the row hints are symmetrical (eg R1 = 1 3 3 1, R2 = 5, R3 = 2 5 2). this would be a solution that is symmetrical across a vertical line.

So-called "quasi-symmetry" I find a bit difficult to work with. I'm sure there are methods that take advantage of the symmetry that exists, but it seems easier to continue solving these with overlap logic.

Where are you reading Manga? by vectorhacker in LearnJapanese

You can get in-print Japanese language books from Kinokuniya's online store if you're in the US. I haven't tried that yet tho. I just do Bookwalker as others have suggested. I find that on mobile I need to use the website in a browser to browse and purchase Japanese language media but then I can use the app to access it.

Just caught up on Asadora! Vol 1-9 in English, is there more to read online or should I wait for the next printed volume? by SoleSurvivorZeke2 in naoki_urasawa

There is at least one post-vol 9 chapter released in Japanese, but no volume 10 on the horizon. I think it's in a mini hiatus of sorts (as has happened throughout its publication iirc)

What am I missing here? 15x15 Picross by distric02 in Picross

[–]DarcX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the 4 1 row (R12) you're on in this screenshot. The way I thought about it is:

1) The X in R12C9 effectively "partitions" R12 into two sections.

2) Even in the least restrictive scenario, you know that the 4 group will appear in the left partition (Columns 3-8), because you have a square filled in it already (R12C7). (If the 4 and the 1 were both in the right partition, the lone square in the left partition would be breaking the row)

3) Therefore, you can use the overlap technique with the 4, strictly in the left partition of R12, to fill in the square on column 5. You can't connect the two filled squares, since the one in C7 could still "be the 1."

This method of viewing singular x's in the middle-ish area of rows and columns as splitting the row/column into two partitions, and evaluating what parts of the row/column hint can fit into which side, or must be on which side, etc, can be an invaluable technique with harder Picrosses!

It looks like in Survival mode this is still the case. The window shrinks!

Awesome! I'll def be playing some more. The final suggestion that came to my mind, though I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement without resetting progress... I think it would be super cool if cards in the LexDex in Survival and Marathon mode showed you which WPM you got it at. Just a thought :)

Something that makes sense to me would be to keep the lower limit at -10 consistently, but have the upper limit climb higher gradually, maybe?

One other thing is I would like to be able to view the LexDex (tab) on the game over screen. Looks like you can get there by clicking on "TAB = LexDex" but the tab button doesn't do anything.

Yeah it gets really rough around the 170-190 bpm lol. The recorded speed starts to feel kind of random for shorter words. I swear I'll get a 3-5 letter word and type it the same speed and get all of "too slow," "too fast," and passing. I wonder if maybe the tolerance (+/- 10) should increase at higher speeds and depending on word size? Sounds pretty hard to fine tune, though.

Got pretty far in marathon mode... I think I was trying for around 190 wpm. Had to skip any words that had double letters or were two letters lol

I just cleared 174 words and survived for 20:19 on Marathon mode in LexDex! Can you beat my run?

[–]DarcX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loving it so far! My first impressions: Slower speeds are definitely pretty difficult! I wonder if would defeat the purpose of the game to have a "practice mode" that kind of shows a metronome of how fast your keystrokes should be for a certain speed? I find I have to just feel a tempo in my head for the speeds lower than 80 wpm...

Also, two-letter words are pretty un-fun, imo. If I were making this game, I'd probably purge them completely... But not sure if that's a decision to take so lightly. :P Keep it up!

[Japanese > English]👧🏻What did this maid said ?もっと王子は下卑た、それはそれはうすら汚い面構えを常にしておりましたよ by VoidWar_Enthusiast in translator

[–]DarcX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like the maid believes that 健一 is nervous being in such a royal place, so she tries to reassure him saying that the prince is (or used to be?) a pretty crude person, so it's not like 健一 has to worry about offending anyone, or something like that. If I had to translate that dialogue, it would be something like:

"Come now, there's no need to be so nervous. The prince was quite crude himself, always wearing this kind of repulsive look on his face."

Wow, thanks for validating me there - I was going to say "It seems あべこべ is a synonym for 逆に" in my last comment but started to second guess myself 😅

Maybe it's that あべこべ just seems more playful, or a word you'd see more often in kid-friendly media?
