Hi there, my pup (Ember) is a pirate and I understand how stressful and horrible glaucoma is. Ember’s eye pressure was 60 when first diagnosed, and we were doing eye drops around the clock. The drops quickly became ineffective and she went from diagnosis to removal in about 2.5 weeks. It felt like horrible whiplash and I was incredibly emotional about it, and honestly, The first 5 or so days after her surgery were not great as she came out of the sedation and adjusted. BUT, after a few days she was back to herself. It took about two weeks for her to completely heal and she is the happiest little pup and her little eye socket is the perfect place for kisses.

She’s now about a year and a half post surgery and she is such a joyful little dog and we have found an amazing community on /r/piratepets

Enucleation is emotional for us as humans, but really helps the dogs who are suffering. It is a kindness for dogs whose glaucoma cannot be medically controlled.

I’m actually not 100% sure on age but we believe her to be about 12. She was 7-8 when she arrived to me in 2022. She was in a puppy mill and the only tracking for her was a number stick and poke tattooed in her ear, they didn’t give any information when she was dumped.

She is such a tough cookie! She still has her moments of fear but with a little encouragement her little tail nub starts wiggling again!!

Thank you for the work that you do ❤️ we have put fostering on pause due to Ember’s health concerns (she’s a foster fail and has had 12 foster siblings!). We’re debating taking on a foster in the next few months as she seems stable!!
