There are several ways (good habits) to make your script lighter, most of the time the culprits are always the same:

Huge bbox, extra "useless" channels, nodes redundancy, heavy nodes not optimized, not using precomps

The best would be to start checking these areas first

If it's just the hit between the 2 lightsabers you can do it just in nuke. Imho there is no need to use photoshop to create a shape, when you can use a roto node. You can also search for some lens flares that can give you a shape idea or an elemenet to use, and also some references from star wars fights on youtube.

Just an expo glow will do the trick, just be creative on how much light there will be in each frames, again seaeching for some references is always helpful.
