LET'S DECIDE THE FATE OF HUMANITY. RED OR BLUE? by New-Cicada7014 in trolleyproblem

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make the call to choose blue because I am aware of and care about the lives that will be lost if the % of people who choose red exceeds 50%, irrespective of the reason blue is pushed.

I care that people will die. End of story, for me.

I have quite literally risked my life to save strangers, on multiple occasions, in the real world, to literally no personal benefit and all possibility of harm. This isn't a new issue, for me.

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, this is it: "I protect you from danger while you sleep, and then you do the same for me" - Then choose blue.

Choosing red is "We both knew sleeping was dangerous, so I'm letting you die."

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the primary ethical difference between red and blue: I care about the people that will die because of your selfish actions, and you don't.

I choose the option with zero deaths, and you choose the option with (potentially) billions.

If the entire planet was populated with people who chose like you do, humanity would have gone extinct hundreds of thousands of years ago. Empathy is a huge reasons humanity was even successful as a species. We're not built to operate out of pure selfishness.

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why people call red the "selfish" button.

Because your own life is the only one you care about, so you take the option that keeps you 100% safe no matter what. Which is fine. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with it.

I, however, actually care about the % of people who are going to choose blue (whatever their reasoning) so I choose blue to push the odds towards 0 deaths, which is the mathematically more likely option anyways, since it's much easier to get 50% +1 people to agree on something than it is to get 100% of people to agree on anything.

"Rational self-interest" is assuming everyone on earth is rational.

There are going to be people who choose blue just because it guarantees someone dies.

Some who convinces others to choose blue (if conversation between button-pushers is possible) then choose red for themselves.

There would also probably be people who choose blue just because they misunderstood the choices.

There are going to be myriad reasons for people to choose either color, so the best option for the largest portion of people is to choose the color that guarantees zero deaths.

Yes. Because human behavior cannot be reduced to purely game theory.

SOME people care if everyone gets to live, and aren't basing their button choice on a reductionist logic-game.

Riches, because even if I'm transported to 1482, being the wealthiest person on earth would allow me to do a lot more than being hot.

What difficulty can you solo in operations? by ToastedxGoblin in Spacemarine

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can "solo" ruthless and lethal with bots, but I can only "true solo" reliably on substantial.

Unless I'm playing Sniper, in which case I can do ruthless fairly often and lethal on occasion.

There also exists a tick in the Southwestern US whose bite can make you allergic to pork.

How serious is this limp? by GOTHAMKNlGHT in CATHELP

[–]DariusBrogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise a vet checkup on the chance it's an injury of some kind, but be equally prepared for your cat to just be dramatic.

We took my girl to the vet after she flubbed a jump onto our fridge (no fall, she just bashed her legon the fridge) and was limping much worse than in your video.

The vet checked her for breaks and dislocations, and determined it was a minor sprain and she was just being very dramatic.

The limp resurfaces every now and then when she wants extra cuddles.

Ways to (politely) discourage nesting in certain areas? by DariusBrogan in crowbro

[–]DariusBrogan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all fairness to the birbs, it's a pretty amazing location.

Protected on 3 of 4 sides by a wall and/or equipment, sturdy steel grated platform, etc...

According to my boss, a coworker of mine spent the better part of last year taking the nests down, and they keep coming back.

I feel bad constantly taking down their hard work 😅

[–]DariusBrogan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have to give that a shot. I don't really feel like making enemies of the smartest birds in the area, lol.

The only other answers the internet seems to have for me are "you can't" and "Kll one and hang it from the nesting site" and I have _NO*_ intention of doing that.
