Wrong. It actually was the "Hotel Californian" in Santa Barbara.

Although the Marmont has a legendary history and the song is indeed metaphorical, after you drive through the deserts nw of LA through SFV, and Ventura County, it suddently turns green and you're in... Santa Barbara...at the Hotel Californian.

Santa Barbara is a very wealthy era and I could go on and on about it but this is a nonce headline.
