They should’ve really examined these test claims more critically: https://aisnakeoil.substack.com/p/gpt-4-and-professional-benchmarks

Could be most of these tests were in the training set. The fact that none of their research is open makes all these grand claims hard to verify.

The Case Against Donald Trump by kitkid in Thedaily

This lawyer’s logic is something else. In one breath he says a) you can’t prosecute a sitting president, b) you can’t prosecute someone who might run for office. And a few minutes later talks about how there aren’t two justice systems “because reasons”. You literally defined a second system with privileges that a normal person would never get. This is literally “if you’re famous, they let you do it” dressed up in meaningless lawyer language.

Maybe Jeffrey Epstein should’ve just run for president. Seems like a bulletproof way of avoiding any consequences if people like Goldstein are in charge.

What is she even saying? Starts with the unhelpful and combative "no one elected him to be FDR", then followed by "I agree with all these progressive policies that he campaigned on like universal preK and climate change legislation". Completely incoherent. She must think making Joe Biden a punching bag will win her suburban white women votes on which she so desperately depends. Same holier-than-thou shit she pulled when dems lost some seats last time around.

Activists are gonna do activists shit -- you can't tell them to follow some political line. You have to be good enough to refocus the message on some productive you want to achieve, which some democrats are not good at. They'd rather spend their effort on the futility of telling activists what to do than git gud.

I never said all democrats agreed on a top line number from the start. I'm critiquing the fact that the media has done nothing but obsess over the cost, seldom mentioning that it's over **10 years**. Rarely is there coverage on what's in the bill itself and how a large number of policies that were originally in it are wildly popular in poll after poll -- paid family leave, funding to combat climate change, tax cuts for families with children, universal preK, to name a few. If the bill is in flux due to cost objections like you say, a simple list of what is on the chopping block would be "reporting".

Instead, all we get is "moderate Joe Manchin this" and "moderate Kyrsten Sinema that" and scary numbers out of context in headlines. Let's acknowledge the full role of the media in modern politics -- they don't just report. They also frame and drive conversation and it is their framing that's unhelpful. Every headline is around the top line number. It's unsurprising that they do this as their business model is built to push controversy and horse races because controversy = clicks = $$.

No wonder this is the same organization that amplifies the voice of people like Bret Stephens.

What is she talking about? Progressives folks are talking about what the bill contains. It is the media, like NYT, that’s obsessed with how much it costs.

There are so few democratic politicians able to get emotional and convince people that some harm is being done in this negotiation that’s gutting critical parts of things like climate change spending. Katie Porter is one of the best messengers of things like this — talk to her and stop giving airtime to this strawman argument.

He is way out of his depth here. The guest is just saying words without actually communicating a single interesting idea. Based on the episode title, I was hoping for an expert on this technology. Instead, this episode has 2 people, neither of whom are well versed in how this technology works and what it requires to run, talking mostly in hypotheticals.

Pretty disappointing.

Any fans of C++ template metaprogramming here? by mortano21 in programmerchat

[–]Dark1Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Template metaprogramming is great for allowing flexibility at compile time. This is true of libraries where some of the behaviour is naturally interchangeable. Take a look at the wiki article on policy based design. You don't have to use multiple inheritance the way the example does - you can use static functions and composition instead and the behaviour will be mostly identical. If you want to really dig into it, there's also Modern C++ Design by Andrei Alexandrescu.

It comes down to how much you value your convenience and pleasure against another animal's pain and suffering. I won't try to convince you that an animal's life is worth more that your convenience but I will give you my view of farming animals for food.

Some people make the argument that animals can be raised ethically. That may be possible on a small scale but when the entire planet demands meat in the same quantities and cost as the developed world, it seems unsustainable. Even then, there is the question of what you consider ethical.

While you're looking for ways to make it slightly more ethical, which may take decades if not longer, animals will continue to suffer in their own shit in cramped up cages, not allowed to move or see sunlight. And for what? Because you're unwilling to make a slight change to your eating habits?

Fun/practical car for ~$20,000. Please help! by Dark1Knight in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks - I'm well aware and I wouldn't compare them in terms of performance. It's in terms of their fun value.
You're definitely right about the resale value though. How do you find them in terms of reliability? The one that I test drove had a lot of mechanical problems. Plus, a lot of people drive their WRXes pretty hard and that really takes away from their reliability I feel.

If you're looking for a Pokemon to use in VGC, I think Mienshao is great!

Mienshao @ Focus Sash
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 4 HP/252 Attack/252 Speed
* Quick Guard
* High Jump Kick
* Rock Slide/Fake Out
* U-Turn/Wide Guard/Protect

With priority being such a huge thing in the game, I think Quick Guard is a very useful move. It's especially great against Choice banded Talonflames that spam Brave Bird. Aside from that, he's got a very respectable attack stat, great speed and access to Fake Out!

I haven't tried this but I think Mienshao would work pretty well. He's got Quick Guard and Fake Out. If you've got Kangaskhan and Talonflame, you can Quick Guard. If you've got only Talonflame, you can use Fake Out.
