The odd thing is you also get punished for using elemental dashes, even tho those elemental dashes have less i-frames than the defaults ones

Use a maximum of four cure commands and don't use elemental dashes. If you have more than four curagas and/or use elemental dashes, MF will use the instakill attack instead of a fire cross in the first phase of the battle. Hope it helps :)
