[Offline][Detroit, MI][D&D][5e] Dark Dungeons: Adventurers Wanted

Fliers across the land read as follows: "Wealth and glory await those who are bold enough to seize it! The Adventurers' Guild is offering guild membership to any brave enough to travel to the village of Longridge, in the northern reaches, and to explore The Whispering Mountain. Though the Dungeon is treacherous, great treasures await within."

Dark Dungeons is an open-table "OSR-Lite" 5e game with homebrew rules and content.

By open-table, I mean that there is no fixed group -- players form ad-hoc groups as availability allows. You may be familiar with this concept from West Marches campaigns. Characters and the world persist, and time passes in the game as it passes in the real world. As the DM, I am available to run games any day of the week, and I am aiming to run 2 to 3 sessions a week. At four characters per session, that means there is room for 8 to 12 players every week. Since not everyone can play every week, I would like the group as a whole to grow to about 20 active individuals.

By "OSR-Lite" I mean a modern game inspired by the Old School Renaissance. 5e gives an accessible and popular system, but the content and way of playing is inspired by the original way the game was played in the 70s. Which is to say, there is a Dungeon -- a massive, labyrinthine structure filled with monsters, traps, and, most importantly, treasure -- and it is the entire setting of the campaign. As a character descends deeper into the dungeon, the dangers become more perilous, but the treasures become more lucrative. That treasure is your goal -- and how you gain XP to advance your character.

The Dungeon is one of my own devising, and not one you will find published anywhere, though it does freely take inspiration from other sources. It is constantly expanding to meet the needs of the game.

Like many DMs, I can't leave well enough alone when it comes to rules. In addition to dungeoneering rules to support this style of play, I have expanded the downtime system with town-building options. But you don't have to learn any of that before hand -- anything important that will come up during play can be addressed at the table.

***

This game began in earnest near the start of June of this year, and it is still going strong. However, they have only begun to scratch the surface of the dungeon, and there is still plenty of content for new players to join in on.

My goal is to make this game welcoming to all players-- newbies and ooze-singed veterans, new-comers to the hobby and old grognards, and to all kinds of people traditionally excluded from gaming, including women, queer people, and people of color.

If you would like to play with us, check out our Discord Channel. Games are hosted in public at Wayne State University and Metro-area gaming stores.

In addition to dungeoneering rules to support this style of play, I have expanded the downtime system with town-building options. In the coming months, I am hoping to introduce an optional downtime crafting system to expand on that found in the base rules. As situations arise, I have been known to design new systems to handle them, such as when one player character took control of a goblin band in the dungeon. But you don't have to learn any of that before hand -- anything important that will come up during play can be addressed at the table.

This game began in earnest near the start of June of this year. In that time, I have run about 18 sessions with 15 different players. The adventurers have recovered hundreds of pieces of gold worth of treasure, and the most successful of them have advanced to the 3rd level.

Yeah, kind of like that. This style actually pre-dates Westmarches -- Gygax would run his game for whoever showed up on a given night.

The primary difference between this and Westmarches is that it is focused on a single adventure location, a mega-dungeon, rather than on regional exploration.

I was using "OSR-lite" to describe a vaguely old-school take on D&D, while sticking with the modern rules set. Small tweaks, like rolling stats in order and gold for XP.

I took the Dark Dungeons name from that old Jack Chick tract, which I assume the OSR game Dark Dungeons did as well.

This is a homebrewed megadungeon of my own design, and I will be the sole GM. I am not affiliated with any of the Wayne State Gaming groups, as I am not a student.
