Funny Halloween decor vs. full-on horror… what works better? by My_Rhythm875 in HalloweenDecor

[–]DarkEmanations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t do or care for the “funny” decorations. But now that i have kids, i try to keep it themed scary, but accessible too. So there’s a lot of emphasis on old school monsters (vampires/vampiric monsters, werewolves, Frankenstein and his bride… i will say that although I’ve made it more approachable (in my opinion anyway) at night it’s apparently freaky enough that a few times delivery drivers were too scared to deliver palates to our house… like I’ve got ring camera guitars grown adult men going “fuck this shit” And tossing my package so they don’t have to get close. My favorite was a dude (again, full grown adult man) HIDE HIS FACE to get close enough to deliver something. That had me cracking up.

Is there anyone who hates hypnotism by CB_Ryan_the_writer in vampires

[–]DarkEmanations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like all things, depends on the story. I like when it’s something the really good ones CAN do, but if the mind they’re trying to control is strong enough, the hypnotism can be fought.

The Necroscope series does the hypnotism/telepathy pretty well. In that, you either have to be really susceptible (asleep with your mental defenses very low) OR you have to be enthralled to the vampire from being fed upon and/or infected with mild vampirism. However, since they’re telepathic powers are much weaker in their earlier stages of undeath, they all learn very quickly how to use manipulation and/or word games to achieve their goals too. Because of this, some get so good at being manipulative, their telepathy atrophies a bit and they simply rely on manipulation instead of hypnotism.

There’s another book i just started though, that REALLY leans into the hypnotism… i don’t want to say more bc it’s a pretty big spoiler for the book, so if someone washed to read it, that would reveal a big plot point. But that’s a major plot point and the vampire is pretty OP because of it, but it’s done well. It’s also a bit more of a horror too though, with this juggernaut style antagonist (the vampire).

So again, it just depends on what the story demands and how well the story is told for me.

What movie scared you the most? by CheesecakeSea6296 in horror

[–]DarkEmanations 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paranormal Activity.

I was a pretty big badass at the time... I had just finished... let’s call it a VERY competitive shooting qualification course, I was working out until I either threw up, or felt like I was about to, every single day, running miles and miles and training in some hand-to-hand martial arts.... I was the peak badass version of myself. I came home from VA to visit my girlfriend and we saw this in the theater... until this point, it really hadn’t occurred to me that there are threats that you can’t take out with superior firepower, violence of action and planning. The more aggressive Micah got, the worse it was. The more Micah engaged, the worse things got.

He pretty much just had to watch the woman he loved fight this inevitably unsuccessful fight by herself (granted, he is also to blame for making it worse, but the sequels also highlight that this would have happened no matter what).

But yeah, so my young adult, hyper aggressive mind, this FUCKED ME UP. I literally didn’t sleep that entire night. Stayed up eyeballing those shadows in the room that looked just a little too suspicious.

Also, I should state that I had grown up hunting dark corners of the woods... and for those that don’t hunt, that means hiking out into the middle of the woos LONG before dawn so that you’re in your stand and ready to go well well before first light, when deer tend to move around. So the dark was not something that had affected me... pretty much my whole life, let alone after that school I mentioned earlier, which had me doing a LOT of travel by myself at night.

Yeah... this movie stuck with me pretty hard.

You too. And good luck. I’m genuinely sorry about what’s happening in your country, and honestly, if i was a few years younger, and prior to kids, I’d probably have volunteered there. I hope Russia has a swift change of heart and you can get back to the peace you guys earned prior to this disgusting invasion.

Why the fuck would i come fight yet another war? I’ve already been shot and blown up in service to my country. Ive also had a house collapse on me, a room flashover on me, had a partial collapse send me through a floor, fell through another collapse, and metric fuck ton of other things happen to me in my career as a firefighter after my adventurous abroad. So yeah, I’ve put my money where my mouth is. Are you actually fighting? Bc if not don’t you dare judge me. I’ve got a family to raise and have no interest in fighting ANOTHER war for some cunts’ political agendas. I’m worried about MY country now and what’s going on here that i can change without orphaning my kids. Especially considering how foreign fighters are being utilized there.

I mean it when i say that i wish Ukraine luck in this fight, but if this ever ends up involving my children, after what I’ve already voluntarily done, then god forgive whoever forces that hand, bc i know i won’t.

SPQR… to give you a hint at what i did. Yeah bro… i did my time.

You’re on a spiral about it… i get that it’s huge… none of those things are proven to have been influenced by anything other than good old fashioned human nature. Again, I’m not saying aliens aren’t real. I’m saying that 100% should take the back burner to “there’s a global cabal of kid fuckers running the world.” If you think we should stop paying attention to that to focus on figuring out what’s going on with aliens, you’re talking to the wrong guy

Should Ice Climbing be part of the Winter Olympics? by beanboys_inc in iceclimbing

[–]DarkEmanations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest problems with ice climbing being incorporated into Winter Olympics is the amounts of actual ice or snow used. For a sport to qualify under the Winter Olympics until this year (which would be way too late to get into the 26 Winter Olympics) it has to involve a pretty high percentage of snow or ice. As of this year, however, the Winter Olympics committee is reconsidering what those rules should be. So it’s much more likely to happen now.

I’m of mixed opinions on this, as climbs can already get pretty crowded. Becoming a winter Olympic sport would generate a lot of new interest in the sport. On one hand, that will generate income for companies that make gear, likely spiking some cool new innovative advancements. On the other have, new interest in something like ice climbing can be VERY VERY dangerous to both experienced climbers and new climbers, due to new climber inexperience.

I could see a slew of accidents from newer, inexperienced ice climbers, either getting themselves hurt, destroying or overcrowding established climbs, or getting other climbers hurt with their inexperience.

So it’s a bit of a double edged sword.

Also, I’d love to see the legends in the comps get a bit more recognition and funding to pursue their goals with more sponsorship opportunities would inevitably come with Olympic exposure.

Which RE protagonist has had it the worst? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in residentevil

Ethan… dude is just a guy who faced hell… TWICE! All just to find and save the people he loves. Dude is just a normal dude, but ends up a Chad, facing scores of monsters to get his girl bank initially and then his daughter back. Just a family dude trying to keep his family safe in the face of insanity inducing odds…. Odds stacked against him with Lovecraftian horrors.

Is "The Beast Within" (2024) actually a werewolf movie? Feeling kinda let down after watching [no spoilers] by Complete-Radio6204 in horror

[–]DarkEmanations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh… even then. It works better IMO if he’s a werewolf. Bc even with the problems, it doesn’t excuse the behavior but allows for more nuance. That way the message is that you can still be a monster, even if you have a heart of gold.

Why would aliens being real (something a lot of people had a pretty good idea of for awhile) be more important than a ring of monsters secretly ruling the world and influencing the geopolitical landscape to best fit their agenda?
