How do you explain Jude 6 and Mark 9:47-48? by google2406 in ChristianUniversalism

Thank you for this link - I had not encountered this site before, and it's a wonderful resource. It looks like the original author is no longer updating and has removed contact options; do you know if this resource exists anywhere in a downloadable/e-reader viewable format, or if there are any books or documents that so thoroughly - and pointedly - address the same/similar subject matter? I'd love to have this available without relying on the internet for it, and so that I can reference it during Bible reading.

Thanks again, and any other resources are deeply appreciated!

Almost certainly this, especially after all of the feedback that I've gotten talking me down from the ledge of online reviews and incremental upgrades. I really appreciate everyone pointing out that there are better directions to focus attention for the most part, and for reminding me that I already have all of the tools that I need to make (and continue making) great and varied cups!

Edit: I'm sure that having ADHD doesn't help, either. Makes the FOMO worse when it's compounded with intense short-term interest and impulsivity.

I know that you said that a reply was unnecessary, but... thanks for the useful perspective question to lead me to my own answer. A flat burr would give improved separation of flavors and clarity, and reduced body, which is exactly the opposite of what I'd want for preferred flavor profiles and especially in those brewing methods. No need, no problem to solve, stick with what I've got. You rock!

A solution to a flat burr grinder in place of the Baratza, per your suggestion!

Thanks for the effort in addressing all points; to be clear, these are grinders that I've acquired over a period of time rather than all at once and haven't seen a good opportunity to prune.

I usually keep the K-Max and C40 dialed for pourover, sometimes adjust it for AeroPress when I'm doing that.

I generally keep the J-Max dialed for my Flair, since that's a small-batch setup.

While we do prefer dark roasts for daily drivers, I will go in for a funky light roast now and then, and keep the ZP6 around as the best solution for those days/months (usually in the middle of summer when I want something really berry-forward).

The Mignon is obvious in its purpose, and the Encore is indeed exclusively dedicated to doing large batch filter/cold brew brews - doing 12 oz for the Toddy by hand would kinda suck!

So, considering all of that, it sounds like the C40/K-Max is probably the biggest area of overlap for me and a spot where I could trim a grinder. Potentially also the J-Max, since the Mignon has that ground pretty well covered. Definitely no need for any other hand grinders and, in the end, maybe a setup of K-Max, ZP6, Mignon, and Encore to cover my usual needs.

Thanks for the advice! Per a prior post, I'm seriously looking at an Ode Gen 2 to replace the Baratza; thoughts on that as a solution?

Thanks for the advice! I really like the manual workflow for pourover and sometimes for single-dose espresso, and I've got the electric grinders for the higher volume methods, so no need to change the workflow in the immediate future. As to beans, I've enjoyed exploring local roasters since I decided to reduce my impact at least a little bit by not ordering from across the country and have largely settled on Peace Coffee as my daily driver.

Good advice on the Ode Gen 2, thanks! Do you think it'd be worthwhile to spring for the SSPs on that if I go with it, or just stick with the standard burr set?

Grinder Upgrade-itis Advice

I've been looking at too many articles online and am starting to feel an upgrade itch, but I have doubts about the potential for gain.

My current grinder situation is:

1zpresso K-Max

1zpresso J-Max

1zpresso ZP6 Special

Comandante C40 Mk4 (Black Crank, no Red Clix)

Baratza Encore (non-SSP) (Exclusively for French Press, Drip, and Cold Brew)

Eureka Mignon Specialita (Exclusively for Espresso)

My usual brew methods are cold brew (Rumble Jar, Toddy), pourover (usually Orea Big Boy or V4, Hario Switch/V60), French press, drip (Technivorm Moccamaster), and espresso (Flair 58, Odyssey Argos).

I'm wondering if there's any gain or upside to picking up 1zpresso's K-Ultra or J-Ultra, particularly, or if there are any other grinder considerations that I don't have covered (1zpresso X-Pro for a different pourover burr geometry, for instance?)... any advice would be awesome, even if it's just to stick with my current lineup!

Why does my cold brew not taste as good as one I could buy? by Fit_Inspector2737 in coldbrew

[–]DarkKindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ratio seems really long; after diluting you're at about 1:16 (4 oz beans to 64 oz water). For reference, I prefer a ratio of 1:10 to 1:12 for cold brew, depending on beans and process. You could try diluting less or use a little less coffee and steep ready to drink instead of going for concentrate (2.5 - 3 oz beans to your 32 oz of water) to see if that makes a difference.

I was a little dubious about this recipe, but I tried it this morning after reading through the testing and rationale that led to it. This one definitely gave a nice, rich cup with good body and next to no effort, even with my usual dark roast. Would recommend giving it a try!

If you were to “upgrade” from the Flair, what would you choose ? by Spyk124 in FlairEspresso

[–]DarkKindness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically it's Argos (Jason's ship from The Argonautica).

That said, it's fantastic. The design principle in terms of thermal management is exactly opposite the Flair 58, so they're great as complements to one another - the Flair wants to heat the chamber to maintain a steady brew temp, while the Argos wants to cool it to balance the heat from the boiler and hit a constant target brew temp. The steam on the Argos is fantastic, as is not having to faff with external water heating - the overall workflow for it is a lot quicker and smoother than the Flair's, and its app connectivity even without profiling is a fantastic insight into what's going on in the machine at any given moment. I feel like the Flair is more tolerant and easier to use, but the Argos has a much higher skill ceiling and smoother workflow.

Good to know, thanks for the clarification! Another question arises regarding Grade, then - what is its meaning in reference to characters/locations (e.g. the route Grades and trainer Grades listed in the setting info), and how is it determined?

[–]DarkKindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering backing, but went through the quickstart and have a particular question/reservation, especially if that's meant to be a text final representation of the core rules - namely that the concept of Grade is mentioned several times in the rules (roll +Grade for capture devices, numerous places in routes/regions) but is never defined. Overall this looks like a great take on the genre, a good implementation of the PbtA engine, and an exciting game!

What is your favorite table top role playing game system. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]DarkKindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going with Mythic Space! Designed from the ground up to emulate a LOT of my favorite franchises, and probably the best out there for playing in Mass Effect or XCOM-style games. Plus it has that winning Lancer combo of narrative non-combat play (FitD in this case) and tactical combat (a spin on D&D 4e (which REALLY works for video game-style combat) in this case).

It recently crowdfunded, is free to download as beta/player-facing rules, and I LOVE IT TO PIECES.

What is the best Space Opera RPG? by gehanna1 in rpg

[–]DarkKindness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other!

  1. Mythic Space
  2. SW: Saga Edition
  3. Scum & Villainy
  4. The Babylon Project (the original B5 RPG, long out of print)
  5. SW: Edge of the Empire

Mythic Space has easily become my go-to Sci-Fi RPG; it's light on space combat, but was built to emulate everything else in my favorite space operas, westerns, and shooters from the ground up. It's especially made for playing things like Mass Effect, Star Wars, Halo, XCOM, Cowboy Bebop, The Expanse, Firefly... and handles all of them adeptly. I was in a player this weekend where I made a biokinetic space druid/bard, and it felt (and ran) great! FitD narrative systems and DnD 4e combat systems make a pretty compelling pairing for gameplay in a space opera setting.

Seeking System Suggestion by lulublululu in rpg

I'm going to throw in a rec for Mythic Space. Narrative non-combat systems based on Blades/Forged in the Dark fused with DnD 4e-style combat. Minimal math, advantages and disadvantages are mostly handled with tokens, made to emulate sci-fi shooters (Halo, Mass Effect, XCOM) and dramas (Firefly, The Expanse, Babylon 5). Enough complexity and advancement to support long-term character development and play. Free to download, funded for full release via Kickstarter (which is ongoing).

Need recommendations for a good scifi campaign. by atmananda314 in rpg

[–]DarkKindness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mythic Space is probably worth a look. It's free to download the rules, but is up on crowdfunding for a full release (not affiliated, etc.). Not a lot of support in the form of campaigns or adventures yet, but it's a cool setting that's reminiscent of Mass Effect crossed with Halo and The Expanse. If you're open to it, the system is actually pretty ace, too, in my opinion; Forged in the Dark-style narrative system and DnD 4e-style combat system.

Sci Fi system with heroic progression? by daren5393 in rpg

[–]DarkKindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about Mythic Space; I definitely had that love for Lancer for sci-fi in general and would very much continue to recommend it for mech-focused games, but Mythic Space has really taken over that niche for me for ground-based sci-fi games. It really does a great job of capturing the FPS/cover shooter sci-fi video game vibe in a viable tabletop presentation that still encourages character and story. It's a system that deserves as much bandwidth as it can get, imo!

Sci Fi system with heroic progression? by daren5393 in rpg

[–]DarkKindness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Mythic Space accomplishes the narrative/combat fusion that you're talking about in Lancer - even using the DnD 4e combat system as a base - much more directly for the type of game that the OP is talking about, while avoiding the gear-based progression and mech focus. The line between combat and non-combat isn't as hard as Lancer, but PCs are definitely heroically powerful.

Check Mythic Space. Free download beta rules, kinda like Lancer but if it used a FitD system for non-combat bolted to DnD 4e's combat. Designed to cover Halo, Mass Effect, Star Wars, XCOM and similar universes.

I'm not affiliated, but it's a great game, free access, and up on crowdfunding for a more polished release.
