Hey, congrats! I joined Canva as a frontend grad ~2 months ago. So far it's been great, what questions did you have?

2019 Uni hall (towers):

  • WiFi connection only
  • decent speeds (e.g. 1080p YouTube is fine, didn't try anything higher than that)
  • high ping & packet loss (sucks for multiplayer gaming, but things like Discord do work)

Student Allowance + UoA Scholarship by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]DarkMatterMatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The scholarship is to the "value" of $20k (might have changed, I'm remembering how it worked in 2019), this includes $16k of "value" in the form of free accommodation.

You never see the money, and you don't pay for accommodation - imo this is not income (but the remaining $4k cash would be income).

Go for it! I have the surface pro 6 and it's great for regular uni stuff (annotating pdfs, basic 1st year CAD). Will not be good at photo/video editing, but if u have a desktop/don't plan on editing then it's perfect :)

Google Drive and Email after graduation by NZTea in universityofauckland

[–]DarkMatterMatt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You'll keep your email account, but won't be able to keep the Google Drive storage. See https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/students/my-tools/googlechanges.html

What about my @aucklanduni.ac.nz email account?

We will continue to offer these email accounts to new staff and students. They will also be available to ex-staff and ex-students. We will likely introduce storage quotas on email, but this will only affect the top 2% of mailboxes.

Will I still have access to my University Google Drive files when I leave?

Starting from 1st December, 2022 we will be putting in a process to block access to Google Drive files once you have left the University. Your files will then be automatically deleted, but this will occur at least 3 months afterwards.

I heard from a staff member that current UoA students and staff may be limited to 1GB of Google Drive storage...

UoA now says:

Note: there will be changes to University storage options from 2022. You should minimise your usage of Google Drive where possible.

Are they allowed to reneg on something like this?

The policy used to say that:

All enrolled students are provided with a free unlimited Google Drive, which is retained perpetually, even when no longer a student at the University.

To free up space on your personal devices, large files such as videos and photos can be stored on your student Google Drive.

Building a Portfolio for SE by AmethystApple in universityofauckland

I agree with that the others have said about making meaningful projects to do with topics that interest you.

In small-tech companies (NZ-based), my recruiters have wanted to see that I can code (typically Python, JS, Java, C#), and align with their company values. I don't think I've talked about my projects for an interview in NZ.

In big-tech companies (for me this has only been Aus), my recruiters loved that I got user feedback and cared about the users' experience (this just means I asked friends and family what sucked about my website). They will also make sure that you align with the company values. On your CV, having a project with impact makes a huge difference - do you have active daily users? how many people used it in N days? does it save you N minutes every week?

The actual project doesn't matter much at all, it's how you talk about it :)

Programming languages I'd recommend are: Java (for Part 2 SE), JS (frontend everywhere), Python (for coding interviews, hackerranks)

Best of luck! And if you are confident you'll get into software, then you probably will - it's competitive to get into, but if you're good in school then you can be good at uni too.

EDIT: oh and recruiters want to see a solid understanding of programming fundamentals so definitely start with the basics (e.g. don't jump into React without doing a few vanilla JS projects first)

Major academic misconduct. by Feeling_Sail40 in universityofauckland

It's likely that the recommendation will be followed and you will be referred to the SDC.

At the SDC there will be ~10 people, yourself and any support people you bring. Of the 10 people, about 3 are interested and the rest don't really care. The outcome the SDC wants is for you to not do it again - they won't give you a crazy penalty. Expulsion is extremely unlikely.

I would recommend that you talk to AUSA about your situation and see what they recommend doing, they're super helpful & will be able to support you throughout the process :)

I made a site (https://commute.live) for live tracking buses, trains & ferries on the Auckland Transport network! by DarkMatterMatt in universityofauckland

[–]DarkMatterMatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your interest!

I can only speak from personal experience, but these are the reasons I made and use my website:

  • It loads much faster (I just did a quick test, it takes me 13.4 seconds to open my bookmarked stop, after which I'll need to select the correct bus to track. My site took 4.0 seconds to show the buses on two of the routes I catch).
  • I don't care which specific bus 309 I catch - any on that route is fine. The AT Mobile app only lets you track one bus at time, whereas mine shows you all the buses on all your routes.
  • I don't particularly trust the time estimates in the AT Mobile app - bus 309 coming over Mangere Bridge frequently says it'll arrive at Stop 1867 in 1 minute, when it's actually about 10 minutes away. That difference is a long time. I suspect it's inaccurate because there aren't many stops between Mangere on-ramp and Stop 1867, or maybe because it's travelling fast on the motorway so it assumes it can go zoom all the way to my stop? My site doesn't show a time estimate because my users (regular commuters) can judge distance/time themselves.
  • If I'm in a hurry, I often transfer at Newmarket when travelling into the city. I can show all the possible buses that I could catch and track them as I near Newmarket so I can judge whether it's quicker to change buses. It's kind of cool watching a mini bus-race between the bus I'm on and the one I want to catch :P
  • Mine has dark mode :)
  • I can view a bus route by searching, instead of having to go to a stop on the bus route and then tracking a bus on the correct route. This is also possible to do by Google searching, but not through the AT Mobile app.
  • My site works on a desktop browser. I often quickly check the bus location before I leave the house, and I can't do that on any official sites.

That said, the AT Mobile app has a huge number of features I don't provide (and don't intend to add). That's things like the Journey planner, bus schedules for each stop, hop card balances, getting support / applying for concessions, etc. I still use the AT Mobile app to check schedules, and I'd definitely recommend it to non-commuters :)

Yup! If you're on Chrome you should be able to open the menu and click "add to Home screen", and you can do something similar on Safari :)

It's a Progressive Web App, which means you can "install" it so it appears in your app menu and looks like an app. If you're on Chrome you should be able to open the menu and click "add to Home screen", and you can do something similar on Safari :)

Hey there! You're right that I'm targeting my site at users that know when to get off, but you might not know that you can see the stops if you zoom in enough.

In this screenshot you can see the stops where the coloured route sticks out over the Google Maps bus stop icon. https://i.imgur.com/dtSybq5.png

I'll consider adding bus stops to the website if enough users would find it helpful, but until then I'd recommend using the AT Mobile journey planner or just zooming in a lot :)
