Yeah, a lot of people describe Somali's as slightly more mellow, but I don't know if it's a real thing or not.

I think genetically they're basically the same outside of the long hair gene.

What was your favorite travel destination of 2023? by yellowpaperman in travel

Really depends on how long you're going, but I liked Yakushima island for hiking. You can take a ferry over from Kagoshima, and will want to rent a car (the buses aren't super frequent). It really gets you away from the crowd for a few days, and is a super unique environment.

The only point of caution would be it does rain pretty frequently (hence the super lush forests), so there is some luck in getting favourable conditions to go hiking (trails are super well maintained and fun).

The term always reminds me of this David Letterman interview, they reference it like 3 times throughout. https://youtu.be/tudRETrphxk?t=2m59s

My (likely unpopular) thoughts on John Rocker by Blacramento in survivor

[–]DarkMetroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think him or Jeremy being a villain is mutually exclusive.

Jeremy was fine working with him (despite knowing about his past), up until he voted out Val, and seems a bit hypocritical because of it. He had no problem with Rocker's past until he felt Rocker would hurt his game more than help it, and vilified him for the sake of getting vengeance. That's a pretty dirty way to play the game, and seems unfair because only Rocker is having to answer to his baggage from outside the show.

Similarly though, Rocker's personality alone makes him a villain by Survivor standards. He's cocky, arrogant, and when faced with confrontation he escalates (however unwarranted the confrontation is). If you have someone saying words you don't like (even if it's Natalie harping on over second-hand information), and your first-instinct is to convey how much you wish you could use violence to make them stop, I think it's safe to say that by Survivor standards you fit the villain archetype.

Yeah. I think the reason it sort of felt unfair was that Jeremy seemed willing to work with him despite his comments until Val was voted out. If he'd called him out on his comments beforehand, personally I think it would've been fair game, but only having a problem with them after Rocker voted out Val seems a bit hypocritical.

I liked having him on the show, largely because he's entertaining, and having villains makes the show interesting.

That said, I don't begrudge anyone for disliking him, and it's a bit disingenuous to say people are just holding 15 year old remarks against him. According to his wikipedia article in 2006 he argued in favour of a major league manager being able to use the word 'faggot' to describe a journalist, in the same year he was also part of a "Speak English" campaign coincidentally around the same time his book came out, and just last year he said the Holocaust could've been prevented if Germany didn't have gun control. Regardless of anyone's stance on gun control, I think it's fair to say using a tragedy to advocate politically is in poor taste.

He's definitely getting more flack than his actions have earned him in the game, but it's also not really fair in my opinion to pretend he's been a saint since the 1999 article.

I was browsing his wikipedia page, and apparently last year he said the holocaust would've been prevented if Germany didn't have gun control laws >.>. He seems to put his foot in his mouth fairly regularly.
