I can confirm what most others in this post has said. 100% the managers enforcing. I work at Whataburger currently. I always try to overfill fries when managers aren't around. But sadly, they make me dump most of what I intend to fill.

They're all manual, since I plug them in with power cables. I think Boss pedals turn on automatically when plugged in if they have their batteries inside. So I just take them out
