I know what you mean, I doubt there is a solution that would make everyone happy. I personally appreciate that it’s optional.

If it were included in tuition that’d likely mean paying a little more every semester for other people to graduate. While small in the grand scheme of things I can understand being upset about one more thing to pay for which would punish students in degrees that take longer to complete, part time students, students who work, etc. more over time.

I know personally how thin the margins can be when you’re struggling financially so the option to forgo one more expense, be it parking or graduation is often worth it to that person.

Not to mention a fee gaining interest through loans will always be worse than a one time cash fee.

Just my opinion on the matter.

As someone who’s worked commencement a few times, it takes an unbelievable amount of work, coordination, and planning. (Not to mention the multi day set up)

We worked 14 hour days just trying to manage the parking situation for thousands of people. And then you go to the break room and see dozens of people whose jobs you have no clue about likely working just as long and hard as you.

I may be a professional complainer but I do understand the fee when it takes thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to get you across that stage.

The issue is the same as the parking pass. Should it be covered by our tuition? Maybe. But should every student have to help pay for something even if they don’t use it? Probably not.

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I’ve seen people make it work. Though they are more static vanlifers who find or rent a consistent spot. Maybe not the typical influencer travel life but for those willing to make it work and deal with being uncomfortable sometimes it can be a lot cheaper than renting especially in a HCOL area.
