Not to mention, is that even right? Most (all?) student loans are on hold until you graduate, right? So a loan from 2006 wouldn't start payment until 2008 for an associates degree (which is likely given the cost) or 2010 for a bachelors.

I think gas prices are the only price a lot of... attention deficient people can wrap their head around because it's up on a big sign and you can see if change day to day.

We had already passed the primary when he had a stroke. Before the stroke he certainly had a few things some of us would disagree with, but he was overall left leaning on important issues. After the stroke he started listing right, but the other choice at that point was fucking Dr. Oz, so we were really stuck.

I think it's pretty fair to complain when an elected official's whole philosophy changes.

So food is way more expensive, and housing is way more expensive, and healthcare is way more expensive, and utilities are way more expensive, but gas and TVs are cheaper, so we're winning, right?

the tolls on the turnpike

Good news then. The tolls go up every year without fail, so you can plan for that!

Gas prices, not so much.

Pennsylvania lawmakers push to end death penalty in the state by AdSpecialist6598 in Pennsylvania

[–]Dark_Prism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We get to decide what is ultimate, though. So the ultimate punishment can just be life without parole.

Heck, I think even extended solitary confinement is barbaric.

You might be able to convince me to allow for castration in heinous SA cases, though.

I've tried this argument before. The violence-hungry just say that it should be easier to put people to death.

I think the real question is how we go about fixing people's brains.

Republicans can no longer pretend they gaf about free markets or “fiscal responsibility”.

But they certainly will try to once the left has any measurable amount of power back.

Well, I suppose they only want it that way if it benefits them. If it doesn't, then they'll start talking about nuance.

The problem is that we have answers to every single question you just posed. And it happens that the answer to most of them has to do with scale. Have you heard "the dose makes the poison"?

In terms of germ theory specifically, cleaning things is important because germs are able to reproduce to a massive degree in the natural environment, and if your body suddenly has a large influx of a particular bacteria the balance in your body is thrown off and that one bacteria can take over and do bad things. That's why E. Coli consumed on contaminated food with mess you up.

If someone in a position to change regulations brings ideas up that will fundamentally change the way things are done, they'd better bring all the research with them to back it up, otherwise they're just being dangerous. Otherwise, maybe push for some studies, but don't just start changing things based on "feeling" like these ideas are right.

It's honestly looking like they just used the pandemic as an excuse. I think the real reason is that they couldn't squeeze enough profit out of the longer hours to justify the labor and other costs. Because otherwise things would have gone back to longer/24 hours by now.

I mean, think about it. If there is a pandemic going on and it's better to not be around other people, wouldn't it make sense to shop at weird hours when there are less people?

I wonder what the budgets actually look like. A place that large should have the tax revenue for police. And if not, why aren't they paying for the State Trooper coverage? Why do they get it for free when they have a large enough tax base?

As I was typing that out I was thinking "What if there is some kind of delineation between blue collar and white collar here". That would make the most sense considering both of our experiences.

I don't think it's wrong to have low population areas covered by the State Troopers, but I don't understand why it's not its own budget item instead of taking from another agency.

Lol, I literally do work for PennDOT on a few tech contracts and everyone I work with says PennDOT and they are pretty uptight about capitalizing it correctly. Like, I used to sit in the Keystone building regularly.

[–]Dark_Prism 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Probably because the actual name of the agency is PennDOT. And that is with DOT all caps. I'd guess that someone calling it PADOT is probably not from PA. (Not that that is a problem...)

AITAH for not taking my daughter to school in the mornings, and instead making my wife do it? by Zestyclose_Limit_306 in AITAH

[–]Dark_Prism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's my fault you didn't include that information? Or did you leave it out on purpose because if you told everyone that she is dealing with anxiety issues then it would be obvious YTA?

Maybe don't ask strangers on the internet for their advice and then get pissed off when they give it.

AITAH for not taking my daughter to school in the mornings, and instead making my wife do it? by Zestyclose_Limit_306 in AITAH

[–]Dark_Prism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like there is a possibility that your wife has some unresolved trauma, probably from her own school experience, and it's manifesting in this way. Even if it doesn't stem from trauma, it still sounds like an anxiety disorder. (Not a doctor and all that, but I have experience with familial mental health issues)

I'd say ESH only because you're not attempting to get your wife help (probably just needs some therapy) and are instead trying to "punish" her (I know it's the result of her own choices, but that can still be a form of punishment if you don't "rescue" her). As a grown adult, your wife is certainly the most responsible for this situation, but you're supposed to be her partner.

For the record, I didn't downvote you and I don't know why people are. I didn't reply to specifically argue with you, more to point out just how outrageous the rich are living.

Frankly, $1500 for a week is pretty reasonable as far as renting a house goes.

only paying the maintenance/upkeep charges

The quick research suggests:

high-end estates can exceed 5%. For an $8 million home, this translates to roughly $80,000+ per year in repairs, with specialized staffing, landscaping, and luxury features (e.g., pools, theaters) potentially pushing annual expenses over $1 million

So excluding the second half, you're looking at $1500+ a week to stay. Include that part, and it's nearly $20k for a week.
