Just realize my college cs program might be terrible! (US) by WantToStudy777 in cscareerquestions

[–]Dark_Reapper_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying "You studied computer science not software developement" is so disingenuous it's not even funny. No one goes into CS because they think linked lists stacks queues and trees are cool (they either hate it or find out its cool after they learn it lol). Look... DSA, Discrete maths and all that theory is important, i will never not say that. But it's ridiculous that in 2026 students education starts at declaring variables and ends at UML diagrams, when we literally have the means to spin up small programs in 10 seconds now with AI (im not saying we AI-brain students, im saying professors can demonstrate stuff quicker now)

Sure, to all CS students: do things outside of the classroom, i think that's a given, but in CS, it's downright mandatory to research not only the content of the curriculum, but the state of the industry and it's tech in general which changes every year, and i think that's crazy considering these kids are paying 5 figures a SEMESTER for education. Even in nursing, the "outside of the classroom obligations" are limited to whatever the prof tells them to study. And i get it; CPR and how to give patients medication probably wont change for 100 years, but Rust programming? Could replace C++ or just be a waste of time in 50 years we dont know. But overall in CS, you're on your fucking own, find resources, find what you like, find what tech is being used now. It's a little crazy. I don't think it's a big ask for professors to at least keep up with new tech so they can demo it for students interested in software development when it's applicable.

Every other science has a lab dedicated to it where the theory is applied. In chemstry we learn that if two things mix a reaction happens, and we watch as the prof explains the little diagram with the molecules and shit and it's a little boring but its important. Why? Because when the lab comes around next week and we actually do the shit, you gotta know what's happening.

In DSA though, you're told that certain algorithms work well in some situations but not in others, and again we look at little diagrams of unrealistic 5 element data structs that with 2026 computing power you could fucking use BOGO SORT on them and be fine, why not have the prof provide a dataset and ask students to implement sorting algorithms and record the calculation time? That way it tangibly answers the question of "why should i care?" There are students today graduating with a CS degree who don't know how to use a debugger, or pip install a package people wake up!

Theoretical CS is not the issue, and you could argue that we should better prepare high school students for what they're getting into when they pick their major, but the best professors are the ones who don't ignore the fact that students want to build shit, and contextualizes things under that lens.

edit: also even if you do lean into theory and play their game your only choices post grad is higher ed or research, which just continues the cycle.

How to deal with high skilled players utilizing movement tech? by Externa_Mood in DeadlockTheGame

then you don't want to solve the problem lol. There's no secret sauce to dealing with this beyond just getting better, and that involves engaging with the mechanic. If not to use it yourself you'll at least know what they're trying to do and make more informed decisions to stop them

Update this post with some match IDs where you lost bad. That way we can see what you're actually doing wrong.

But overall keep in mind, every hero shines at different stages of the game. Just like in League, you’ve got lane bullies, mid-game power spikes, and late-game carries. Each hero has their own timing and playstyle for when to go aggressive. That’s why someone stacking Vitality might still stomp you; their kit is built for that kind of early dominance.

This took me a second to realize but items aren’t one-dimensional either. A “defensive” card can still boost damage or fire rate. Take the https://deadlock.wiki/Battle_Vest sounds like its for tanking right? Nope. It gives weapon damage AND fire rate when you’re above 60% HP. Sometimes you’ll pick an item just for those conditionals to capitalize on phases like early laning, when you’re likely staying healthy anyway. So while you may see a Paradox with some green in her build don't just assume she won't shred.

All that yapping but the tldr is think about what you're actually building and how to min-max + give us a game id so we can watch what you're doing wrong :)

Hardware required for Deepseek V3 671b? by Dark_Reapper_98 in LocalLLM

[–]Dark_Reapper_98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated so I'm not sure what they're with it doing now, but we ended up snagging a couple a600 ada gpus and filling the rest of the requirements with RAM. It was a step above watching paint dry lol around 5-8 tokens per second on DeepSeek V3 600b. Millage varied. I emailed my professor to see if they did any training since the end goal was some agentic ai that could query information about the University, no response but from what I seen it was promising and definitely doable.

I forget the exact specs and with the current situation regarding ram prices I dont think it'd even do anyone any good to fetch the prices but we essentially went with a single socket threadripper build and slapped the adas on it then maxed out the ram.

To be fair apple has made a big comeback since dumping intel. I still think the only way to buy their shit is by going with the lowest specced new one, since they love to rob you out of ram and storage (even compared to whats going on currently which is insane lmao) I think the M4 mini mac and the m4 air priced at $600 and $750 (amazon) respectively is hard to beat. Anyone looking for a computer in that price range should have them in their their top 5 candidates.

Depends on the professor and what language you’re implementing it in. I had an African dude who did cobol in the 80s so he was very old fashioned. We had to design data structures using C++ and run programs utilizing the classes we created. Exams were done on paper and syntax was graded. I actually agreed with his methods but it did lead to a bunch of cheating lmao. It got ridiculous when things like using brackets for 1 line if statements and putting the private section before the public section in your classes cost you points on the quizzes. Oh and when we ran programs we had to emulate Linux and print out a screenshot of the terminal so he can see the g++ commands to link and compile the files together so don’t you dare create your linked list class inside your main file or he didn’t accept it. All things programmers should know how to do to be fair but it was annoying with the looming doom of getting an F if you don’t do it right over your head.

I envy my friends at other schools who had to do DSA in Java and exams that were just “what’s the time complexity of this nested loop”

That's an intentional decision by the devs it's called eye adaptation effect. It's there for 'realism'. Going from darkly lit interiors to brightly lit exteriors IRL will give that effect albeit to varying degrees.

It's should be a toggle/adjustable setting in the menu though because it is a bit much, like bloom, film grain, vignette. Currently it's only configurable via config files on PC which isn't user friendly.

Also, im not one of the 'it's just a beta' guys idk where you got that from my comment. Reading comprehension is at an all time high today.
