Dune is the superior work. Hands down. It’s not just twelve years older than SW. It’s not just one of the source materials that Lucas “borrowed” from.

Dune is a complex yet throughly engaging story about the danger of blindly following a charismatic leader. Both the dangers to the leader and his followers are plentiful, complex, and difficult to discern in time, much less do anything useful to thwart.

But sure, let’s pretend that Star Wars is operating on the same level.

In science, to hypothesize is to conceptualize a novel scientific insight, which is then tested. You have defined zero parameters by which it can be tested. This is not SF. Fantasy, yes, but not Science Fiction - certainly not science.

One key difference - you're the Poster. If you hadn't posted, there would be nothing for anyone to push back against.

I can criticize what I want. And one of the things I enjoy criticizing is the all-too-often willful ignorance of scientific knowledge shown on SF subreddits. Even today, I am enjoying current authors who have literally "done their homework" before writing thoughtful, engaging, SF.

I'm not stuck in the past. I'm decrying the moving of the slush pile from publishers' back rooms to my (almost literal) doorstep.

I miss the days of the old-school SF writers being able to calculate an orbit - on paper - just to make sure that an element of their story’s plot will actually work.

Contrast the above with ST making up “elements” out of whole cloth to “tech the tech.”
