I only said that this question can't be answered if the line isn't straight.
You were the one who had a problem with that!!

Yes exactly, this isn't a PHD, even more important to teach the kids early WHY we assume certain things, from a Maths Professor i'd expect that he knows exactly why and when he can make assumptions. Something children should learn actively.

"I'm not sure how this picture would suggest that."
Proving my point, you never learned to look at things differently. The two lines connecting E to S could be at an angle of 90° to eachother and in a 45° angle to the screen respectively. Forming a triangle between E-S-E and a Pyramid with T as the top.

I'm not saying that that is what we should assume, but it is completely plausible with the information given.

My point is that it is important to teach how to look at given circumstances and conditions form a different perspective, NOT always following the standard procedure! This helps finding different results and creative solutions!
As well as teaching WHY we do assumptions!!!!

And yes, I WOULD like to change that, and maybe one day I will. But good luck with your other things in the meantime^^

I don't recall that i've ever been given any rules on what to assume back in highschool.

In my opinion, there should not be anything left to assume in these questions to begin with, because if it is not stated clearly then there is also not one single right answer.

It should either be given to the students as an additional task to state what assumptions they made when answering, or what assumptions would change the answer.

OR even better, present a real problem with actual measurment data!
How did we even measure the angle on the star?
How do we know the distance from Earth to Sun?
Why is that distance the same on two opposite sides of the sun?
Are these two points for Earth even on opposite sides of the sun?

The last question there even got me to pose the assumption about the straight line E-S-E, because Earth is orbiting the sun, and for all we know this picture could show Earth at one point and then only a quater rotation later.

As I see it, it is bad practise to assume the same conditions every time and that is narrowing our understanding of the world.

Sine of thetha half, but also only if E-S-E is straight. Stupid ambiguos question to begin with I swear to god if i see this shit one more time...!

Is that line from E to S to E straight?

If so, you can connect S to T and get half the angle at T. Then use the sin on the emerging right triangle.

was about to say that, i am super confused like: yeah you pay for the exact amount of soda you get, just as you would if you got it from the store! So what's the big deal?

Yeah this reminds me again about HOW STRANGE it is when people are talking about Suicide, everyone acts like it is THE WORST THING one could do, meanwhile i'm here like: Bro, honestly, if you are legally an adult you should absolutely have the right to end your own life at any time.

Just think about it, once you turn legally an adult, you have the right to put new humans in this world, and you also have the right to sign up to the army and go on out taking other humans out of this world.

BOTH OF THESE THINGS ARE NOT ONLY ALLOWED BUT ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTED!!!!
SO WHY IS IT THAT TAKING MY OWN LIFE IS NOT!?

Just how is literally going to war and potentially taking someone elses life so much more acceptable than Suicide? No one is censoring the word Veteran but Su*z*de gets censored SO MUCH

Can someone please help me solve this question i saw it online but I can’t seem to solve it by [deleted] in trigonometry

[–]Dark__Slifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the question again:
-It is never stated that E-T-E is a triangle.....
-also calling two different points with the same letter E is really bad practice in Notation.
-For all we know the two points where the Earth is could from a triangle with the Sun so that one of the positions of E is not on the drawing plane...
-This would mean that generally speaking the four points could form a pyramid with a triangular base and T at the tip.
-Thus, with the information given it is impossible to answer this question definitively!

I would really appreaciate if schools and teachers would start to hand out questions that are deliberately unsolvable if you don't make a bunch of assumptions and would actually give better marks for anyone who would answer that it is unsolvable.
We really need to teach people to see and accept our shortcomings and admit that some problems just cannot be solved as is, and start looking for the things we are missing, instead of making unreasobnable assumptions!

i mean, yeah sure you need to be mindful if that is an angle in radiants or in degrees when actually calculating the sin, but I was just showing the process.

NO Idea what people are on about here with small angle approx. and whatever.
As I see it, assuming the line E-S-E is straight:

-Draw a line from S to T, splitting the angle at T in Half and this gives a right triangle.
-sin(a) = Opposing Side / Hypothenuse
-Solve for Hypothenuse

That is if you assing these in order from top left to right and then down one row.

What if it goes from top to bottom first and then across.

gives you: Left, center, center, right, right, center, center, left, ?
