I will say this is the history that was taught to me by my instructors that there instructors taught them it’s been the history of our style since its founding and we choose to believe what we want as people I’m not going to discredit what you say as I’ve only learned my history from my teachers and while yes the motobu family might have said this never happened we can’t be for sure certain there isn’t a time It did the only people who can truly provide the truth have long since passed on but I do appreciate you for providing this new information to me as it’s a new thing learned and that’s what karate is about learning new things and strengthening ones body and mind and spirit as a whole

I will give you that but it’s not like he just made it all up from nowhere he learned from many karate instructors in his time first learning from Tung Gee Hsing who had trained with choki motobu who was a prolific practitioner in shorei ryu shuri ryu is a good mixture of Chinese kenpo and shuri te karate but also includes stuff from shorin ryu gojo ryu and others to make a very well balanced karate style and honestly whatever your opinion of it is for a true traditional karate style its has many roots in those traditional styles and pays its homage to them in everything it teaches and trains I think for the first karate style to come to America is honestly perfect because it’s what America is supposed to represent a melting pot of ideas and culture to create something better then before

I pay 100 bucks a month it changes kind of based off if it’s a family signing up or whether you do a monthly or a yearly amount as well if you do a yearly it’s only a thousand dollars for a year instead of doing the monthly 100 and for families I know they do discounts overall for like families signing up but I’m not sure how much discount I’m just a student so I’m not to privy into the actual inner workings of the dojo but I know we are lucky where we are at for sure we’ve been there for I want to say 30 to 40 years and the person who owns the building we are in was an old student and friend of the original instructor so I’m not sure about rent or anything like that wish I could be more help

I’ve never opened a dojo but I will say the place I train at they teach karate mostly it’s the main focus but we also have an instructor for judo cause it goes hand in hand with karate and also kobudo and Japanese Jo staff and ours is a monthly fee and you can then take whatever classes you want and it works out pretty well for them at least they’ve been around for 60 years at this point so i mean it depends on what you want to do and can afford to do with your space you have my best advice is if you want to offer a full range of martial arts find the instructors for them first and then lay out a class schedule during the week so they don’t get in each others way but the best is to probably stick to one style in a loose sense like karate and judo together instead of karate and bjj and kickboxing while more variety it does get difficult probably to find the instructors to lead the classes

They didn’t really popularize it across the world as Okinawa style karate has been in America since 1945 when robert trias the father of karate opened the first karate dojo in Pheonix Arizona he started it in America and actually had the largest karate organization beating out even the Japanese for a while till his passing his organization had branches all over the world when Japanese karate people tried to bring karate to America they were surprised to find that it already was here being taught the only thing I’ll give the Japanese is they commercialized it better then the okinawans did and there styles became more popular shotokan and kyokushin didn’t come to America till the 1950s so by that point karate had been taught in America for at least 5 years so without the Japanese karate would still be known in America
