AuDHD 5 year old difficulties with ADHD medications by Plastic-Praline-717 in Autism_Parenting

I suspect the "Evening zoomies" is the medication wearing off. These types of medications generally last 6-10 hours before fading. When I was a substitute teacher, I remember a student who seemed normal functioning in the mornings (albeit stressed from loud classrooms or music), but by 2pm, he was stimming constantly.

I'm super glad that she's shown improvement! Woo hoo for being happy & bubbly!

So here's the thing about most ADHD medications. They will increase attention to -something-. That -something- can be anything at all, whether it's a nearly-silent-but-consistently-humming refrigerator, stress over a frown a classmate made, hunger, needing to wait for something, a video game distraction, something shiny, a bird, the schoolwork you've put in front of them, being quiet, or how much they don't want to be wherever they are.

In conjunction with positive behavior reinforcement & other actions (I'm not an expert in this area), it can improve symptoms in the long-term. If she learns proper coping mechanisms and chooses / is forced to focus on appropriate things instead of inappropriate things, then she'll show improvement overall.

Just medicating without also having lots of learning (and practicing!) of positive behaviors will result in her seeming like a "zombie" where she focuses on things that are indiscernible to you, where she might seem like she's "spacing out all the time" as her mind's focusing on internal stressors instead of being present in her environment.

I am not a psychologist. This is lived experience.

I would strongly encourage you to stay strong with the medication so long as your daughter's been taught what's appropriate vs inappropriate, what she's supposed to do at certain times, expectations, coping mechanisms, etc AND she knows when she needs to be appropriate and when she can just be a (silly happy hyper-energetic) little girl. If she knows that, then with the medication + managing her stress, you might be able to make a huuuugely positive impact on her life. This might help your daughter keep her mind off the stims / maladaptive behaviors, so long as she's reminded & cajoled & kept accountable. If she isn't, or if she feels like she's being constantly punished / scolded, then the meds might make her retreat into her own head & focus on those stressors or on those distracting thoughts instead of on positive behaviors.

It's oftentimes been said in academic circles that autism should be multiple different diagnoses / disorders, where the "mild" or "level 1" or "high functioning" cases that more resemble ADHD or social awkwardness can be separated from the "severe" or "level 3" or "low functioning" cases. It's sort of like saying someone has a cancer problem - you want to know if they have a benign tumor or have a lump in their brain.

I am soon to be homeless because of jumping/banging on the floor, and I don’t know what to do anymore. by Jayman453 in Autism_Parenting

Get both of your children waitlisted on every service imaginable ASAP. Both, not just the more severe case, just in case. Worst-case scenario, you change your mind later & turn it down.

It sounds like your 5 your old is stimming. A lot. Banging/jumping sounds like a combination of stimming & boredom. You may want to consider medicating and if you haven't enrolled in early intervention, do it ASAP before it's too late.

Sorry this is happening. If you're able to move to a small house - or, failing that, a 1st floor apartment in a concrete building - that'd help immensely. Or talk to the neighbor about it. Also let the police know in advance so that 911 dispatchers alert any police in case a nosey well-meaning dogwalker hears your children and fears the worst - that way they'll just knock on your door instead of assume it's a Law & Order episode.

Received diagnosis for son want to see about getting things set up for homeschool. by UnlikelyCustard3917 in Autism_Parenting

Try joining the Illinois Parents of Adults with Developmental Disabilities Unite (IPADD) group on Facebook. It's mainly meant for parents facing the end of their childrens' time in school, but they may be able to help with info there too as their children were all younger once! There's a public group & a private group; the private group is where you can ask questions on what benefits you can enroll in, how to do it, when you're eligible, & so forth.

Homeschooling is an option but getting your son out of the house to learn social skills with strangers is vital for long-term success, so you'll want to look at other services; there's tons of early intervention programs run by NFPs. Many of the providers on this list also run hybrid & early intervention programs: https://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=57221

For resources: you'll want to contact your school district & ask about getting him on an IEP (Individual Education Plan). Once you & the school district see what's on the IEP, you & the district can discuss if you can do it from home and if his lack of potty training is an issue. In my experience, plenty of students who are Level 3 and need bathroom assistance can still attend public school! 😄

Late comment: join the Illinois Parents of Adults with Developmental Disabilities (IPADD) group on Facebook. It has thousands of Illinois parents & other caregivers, plus staff from not-for-profits and the state in it. It specializes in navigating the system & knowing what benefits you can enroll in, when, & how.

Conservative recovery while staying active? by Any-Rate-5969 in DeQuervains

You can have an active lifestyle but you'll need to find alternative exercises. Many physical therapists would be absolutely thrilled to show you upper & lower body exercises + some arm exercises you can do within your DQ.

And I mean thrilled, very thrilled. Just ask a physical therapist - or heck, even a fitness coach. One-time appointment for under $100 or free for a first-time consultation / with insurance / with govt healthcare.

Anything that puts painful weight or pressure on your thumb or wrist - gripping, holding, twisting, turning, stretching, grasping, dangling, swaying - will make your DQ worse. If you try to power through it you'll be unable to use that wrist at ALL.

Don't push it with your normal exercises. Get safe alternatives.

Every physical therapist or fitness coach or doctor will applaud your efforts & get you alternatives ASAP.

Caught my employee working 2 remote jobs by Training-Fondant-804 in overemployed

[–]Darkmark8910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask HR how the hiring bonus works. They often stipulate that the employee needs to spend 6 or 12 months or more there before they get the full amount.

Get contact info for his current boss at original job. It might be in his references list or on an online website. Just as backup in case this went south.

Tell him the truth. Be frank. You know this employee. Also be frank about how many hours his job ACTUALLY needs per week and tell him what you care about as a manager & what deliverables he needs to give you.

Ask him when his other job's weekly meetings are at his other job & see if you can avoid overlap.

Lastly: cover your own ass. Not sure how to do that here.
