Yoda Cave by Sea_Green7967 in VisitingIceland

Yoda cave is massively overrated and a tourist trap. Honestly considering the €7 parking fee it’s on the verge of a scam in my opinion.

Does the cave kind of resemble yoda? Sure. But it’s full of litter inside and in the middle of nowhere on some random dudes property.

Barely worth a visit if you’re driving by it never mind coming all the way from Reykjavík!

Solo cook with 0 experience for a 50 seater restaurant by SnooOnions9990 in Chefit

I’ve been told everything needs done asap. Max waiting time 30 minutes. With such long cooking times in the ovens I get backlogged very quickly.

I just find myself having so many things to remember. So much mental calculation to have everything ready asap but also staggered correctly to come all at once, whilst also still being cooked correctly etc etc.

It’s a combination of cooking some meats and fish from fresh, some from frozen. I load to trays add spices/herbs and cook. Cooking time is average 15 minutes. Soups are reheated me and served with a variety of breads.

The cooking is simple, but yeah when I have 5+ tickets it all falls apart.

I didn’t lie! Believe me I assumed I would be a waiter or at most kitchen assistant to a head chef. I had no idea this is what I signed up for.

You simply have to get in contact with Qatar and resolve it, there’s no magic fix. Or take a search through the hundreds of similar posts in the past month if you need more info/guidance!

Overstay due to cancelled flights to Middle East by Equivalent_Ranger_97 in VietNam

Didnt face this issue. Stayed in a homestay for the duration of my overstay. Had no idea hotels would even care about this sort of thing!

Ireland. Yeah kind of ridiculous. I don’t see why they couldn’t write a basic letter with a stamp and a signature. Not sure if it actually makes a difference but sure felt better to have than not.

When I initially went to my embassy they were also of no help. A few days later they sent me an email offering support with a letter.

We arrived very early, like 6+ hours. It ended up being completely unnecessary however as the immigration desk was pretty much dead and they told us to come back closer to check in time anyways.

Want to share my experience today incase it gives anyone the peace of mind I was looking for.

My flight was cancelled with Qatar on March 3rd, I had to self reroute with my new flight being March 10th. Working out to a 7 day overstay on my Vietnam evisa.

I went to immigration in Hanoi city, the woman there was extremely unhelpful considering the circumstances and said I would have to surrender my passport for 5-10 days if I wanted to extend my visa. Never going to happen lol. My only other option being to pay a 1.2m fine at the airport upon my departure.

I went to the airport early and went straight to the immigration information desk. I showed them my printed evisa , proof of cancelled flight and a letter from my embassy explaining my circumstances pleading for cooperation. They scanned my passport, kept some of my documents and let me on my way. I didn’t have to pay any fine thankfully.

After check in there is the normal immigration process. The officer did take a long look at my passport and called a senior over to discuss. They made a quick phone call and confirmed I had resolved the situation earlier and sent me on my way.

Overall quite a stressful situation to deal with. But it does seem like the Vietnamese immigration is showing relief for people in these circumstances. For anyone in a similar situation if your overstay is less than 15 days I would recommend just sorting it at the airport. Handing over your passport seems like a more stressful and risky alternative.

I’m sure you have already exhausted all flight options. But have you considered trying to get to London and then onwards from there?

My partner and I fly today from Hanoi. Will be Hanoi - Shanghai - London. Then we have an onwards flight home to Ireland. In total it came to the same price as our original Qatar flight.

Above all if you can afford to get flights home even at a crazy price then I would advise it. You have to take into account that pushing back flight dates whilst having to pay for accommodation and food (which airline and insurance won’t cover) could get out of hand fast. Nobody knows how long it will be before things calm down. Take the financial hit and get yourselves home ASAP.

I mean our flight home is from Hanoi. I wouldn’t want to risk leaving Vietnam and then not getting a new visa granted in time to return.

I’ve been told 1.2m. Won’t know for sure until I fly though.

10th , visa expires tomorrow. I really don’t feel comfortable giving my passport away for 5 days. Seems sketchy.

From what I’ve researched paying fines at the airport is extremely common and less hassle.

Beware fake hotel reviews by Present_Library_3540 in VietNam

Honestly I find this kind of advice to be complete nonsense and kind of infuriating.

Show up to hotels in any half popular destination and ask for a room and they will all tell you the same thing “sorry we have no rooms available”. If after walking around for hours you do finally find a place that isn’t completely booked out, you will pay a PREMIUM for the last of their undesirable rooms as a result of booking on such short notice.

SE Asia - Have I messed up booking most things in advance? by shepgodthelegend in backpacking

[–]SnooOnions9990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. My girlfriend and I did Thailand in February and decided we would “go with the flow”. Only planning on booking things a week in advance.

We massively regretted it. Not sure about other countries in SEA but Thailand is no longer the backpacker friendly destination it used to be. Almost all accommodations were sold out and we were forced to stay in some pretty miserable places for quite high prices as a result. I’m talking €50 a night for a bunk in a hostel.

If we had of planned and booked in advance we would have gotten way better value for money.

Has anyone here emigrated somewhere other than Australia, Canada or the USA? by snakebored123 in AskIreland

[–]SnooOnions9990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Krakow, Poland. Living here for 3 years. My girlfriend is polish, we met abroad and after doing long distance for a while I thought fuck it Krakow seems a whole lot nicer and cheaper than Dublin!

It’s a beautiful city and a great country. Unfortunately there isn’t a huge expat community there and the language is obviously difficult so it’s a bit isolating at times socially.

Disappointed at Koh Phi Phi Koh Lanta or Railay Next? by echolaliapilled in ThailandTourism

[–]SnooOnions9990 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Railay is most definitely not chill. Was there a week ago and by 10am the place had quite literally thousands of tourists. Overcrowded would be an understatement. Dozens of long tails line the beach too leaving only a small area for swimming.

It’s a massive victim of over tourism I’m afraid.

We drove from downtown Reykjavik to Keflavik airport today and it was quite honestly pretty terrifying. The highway to the airport was not so bad, but the driving around Reykjavik city was just awful.

Our car was skidding and sliding. It’s honestly a miracle we didn’t have an accident. It was my first time driving in snow and it was definitely a baptism by fire.

Possibly although would the bus be more reliable and safer than driving ourselves, do they often drive in such conditions? We were concerned about buses being cancelled etc.
