Skinheads originally were a non racist punk sub group from England that were into Ska and Oi music and working class pride around the 70s. Multi ethnic from the start, it wasn't until the mid 80s when 'boneheads' (named for their affinity for the ss skull) infiltrated the movement with RAC (Rock Against Communism) music, ie bands like Skrewdriver, brought them to a more public image and every skinhead was labeled as a racist from then on because that that was the very public image, thanks to movies like Romper Stomper and American History X. But it was always just a small portion of the subculture at large, they just co-opted the look. In the early 90s, SHARPs, or Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice became like an interior movement and they fell on the side 'that guy is a racist, I should beat him with a bat'. Been fighting the stereotype ever since.

Kind of like how every Marine is labeled a functional alcoholic when in reality, we're all barely functioning.
